Sanctions for Improper Waste Disposal in Bogotá

Two commercial establishments, Oxxo and Mezcal Taquería, located on Calle 85 in northern Bogotá, have been sanctioned for improper disposal of waste in public areas. This operation highlights the authorities’ commitment to maintaining clean and hygienic public spaces amidst growing concerns over waste management.

Details of the Sanctions

Oxxo faced fines due to the illegal dumping of demolition and construction waste, while Mezcal Taquería received a fine during the same enforcement action. The penalties were part of a broader initiative by the Administrative Unit of Public Services to address behaviors that contradict community coexistence and good citizenship.

Administrative Response to Waste Management

The Administrative Unit of Public Services indicated that these actions align with guidelines aimed at identifying and addressing activities that undermine public services. The agency stressed the importance of using public facilities responsibly and adhering to established waste disposal guidelines.

Authorities emphasized the following in their statements:

“We identify behaviors that deviate from the provision of public services and good behavior. We call on all users to use the public toilet service and respect the different frequencies that are established.”

Understanding the Fines Imposed

Fines for these infractions range significantly, from $759,900 to $1,518,400, reflecting the severity of the violations related to the disposal of special waste in public spaces. These penalties are instituted under articles 35 and 111 of the Police Code, which regulates waste management in Bogotá.

Community Responsibility and Engagement

In light of these issues, the Subdirectorate of Collection, Sweeping, and Cleaning has urged residents to participate in positive waste management practices. The agency advocates for the use of ecopoints for proper disposal of waste and recommends contacting the dedicated line 110 for assistance.

Three key actions for waste management have been established:

  1. Operational: Ensuring efficient waste collection and disposal methods.
  2. Pedagogical: Educating citizens on proper waste management practices.
  3. Sanctioning: Implementing penalties for non-compliance.

Through these efforts, the government aims to create a cleaner environment and raise awareness regarding responsible waste disposal.

Public Response and Ongoing Measures

The recent operation was conducted in conjunction with the National Police, the District Security Secretariat, and local government offices to respond to community complaints about waste issues in the streets. The intervention reveals a proactive approach to the prevailing waste management crisis, with over 1,700 summonses recorded throughout 2025 for similar issues.

Residents are encouraged to be vigilant and report any improper waste disposal practices, contributing to a healthier and cleaner Bogotá for all.
