On June 27, 2023, China inaugurated the Chongqing East Railway Station, which now holds the title of the largest railway terminal in the world. Spanning 1.22 million square meters , this colossal structure is equivalent to 170 football fields and is five times the size of New York’s Grand Central Terminal. The ambitious project came at a staggering cost of 6.7 billion euros . What makes this megastructure even more intriguing are its unique characteristics that we will explore below.
A Titanic Project in Record Time
Construction officially commenced in November 2018 , with remarkable progress made visible through satellite images shared by China Perspective. The transformation from a vacant lot to a fully operational station occurred within just a few years. Prior to the initiation of work in 2018, the area was nothing more than a valley. The terminal opened its doors to the public in June and is already capable of handling up to 16,000 passengers per hour .
In Addition to a Station, a Strategic Node
Located in the Nan’an district on the outskirts of Chongqing —a megacity in southwest China—the station is equipped with 15 platforms and 29 tracks . It serves as a central hub within the national railway network known as “ Eight Verticals and Eight Horizontals ,” facilitating connections between the western and eastern regions of the country. From this hub, passengers can travel to significant cities such as Beijing , Shanghai , or Guangzhou in a mere six to eight hours . Furthermore, it acts as a gateway to cities like Chengdu , Wuhan , or Kunming , with travel times ranging from just one to three hours.

Design Inspired by the Region
Unlike many European stations, which tend to favor a more austere design, the Chongqing East Railway Station boasts an aesthetic that reflects its cultural identity as well as practicality. The columns are designed to imitate the huangjue trees native to the region, the vents are shaped like flowers, and welcoming signs resemble bamboo scrolls . Its expansive glass roof allows an abundance of natural light to illuminate the main hall.
A Model of Urban Development
The area surrounding the station has been conceived as a transit-oriented development zone , which will feature hotels, offices, shopping centers, and cultural facilities. This strategic approach means that what was once an empty area has now evolved into a vibrant urban district. Such development initiatives have become an emblematic of modern urban planning in China.
What’s Coming?
The Chongqing East Railway Station is not the end of progress; rather, it marks the beginning of an even more ambitious railway network. High-speed lines like Zhengyu and Yukun are currently under construction and will further solidify the station’s status as a major continental hub. China has consistently showcased its ability to execute mega-construction projects with remarkable efficiency, and this station is no exception.
In conclusion, the Chongqing East Railway Station serves not only as an infrastructure marvel but also as a testament to China’s rapid urban development capabilities. The station is set to redefine how people travel and connect within this vast country, making it an essential component of China’s ambitious transport network.
