The Legacy of Dreyer & Reinbold Racing in INDYCAR
Dreyer & Reinbold Racing has been a significant presence in the INDYCAR garage since its inception in 1999. Founded by Dennis Reinbold , an Indianapolis car dealer, the team has managed to remain a fixture in the racing world, particularly on one of its biggest days: the Indianapolis 500 . Although the team has not competed in a full INDYCAR season since 2012, it has adapted to a part-time schedule, focusing primarily on the Indianapolis 500 since 2014, with few exceptions.
Part-Time Focus and Expert Execution
Over the years, Dreyer & Reinbold Racing has consistently participated in the Indy 500 , often being one of the few teams, if not the only team , attempting to qualify despite their part-time status. The dedication to this prestigious race highlights the team’s commitment to excellence and their impeccable execution under pressure.
This year, the team has enlisted the talents of former Indy 500 champion Ryan Hunter-Reay , who has raced for Dreyer & Reinbold in the Indy 500 for the past two seasons. He is joined by Jack Harvey , who is set to compete in his first race of the season after having a nearly full-time schedule since 2020.
Confidence Amidst Challenges
Harvey, starting in 26th place, is competing in the Indy 500 on a one-race deal for the second time in his career. He has noted that the team’s experience in executing single events has significantly boosted both his confidence and that of Hunter-Reay as they gear up for race day.
“Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, they know this dance,” Harvey stated. “They get prepared for this race as a single event every year, so they probably have helped both of us drivers navigate some of that, especially from a timing perspective and knowing when it’s time to ramp things up.”
Collaboration and Camaraderie
Don Cusick , founder of Cusick Motorsports , has been closely involved in the team’s dynamic, partnering with Reinbold for the last two Indy 500s to participate in this monumental race. He has witnessed the unwavering commitment from Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and acknowledges how they have achieved continuous success over the years. Notably, at least one car has finished in the Top 11 for the past four years, which underscores their tenacity in a challenging landscape.
“Dennis is a pure racer,” Cusick observed. “He’s a really smart race strategist, he knows when to make the right moves at the right time and he has a team with a lot of heart. These guys have been here all night getting Ryan’s car back together after a fiery Carb Day explosion.”
The Road to Race Day: Overcoming Adversities
Even before Hunter-Reay experienced technical difficulties during Carb Day, he was aware of the extensive preparations made by the team to ensure a successful race. He downplayed the challenges faced by part-time drivers compared to full-time ones, focusing more on the organization’s efforts to bring everything together seamlessly.
“Indy is Indy,” Hunter-Reay remarked. “From a driving perspective, Indy is so unique, so there’s nothing different on that side of it for me. It’s more just trying to get that large group of people together and making sure that everything is as you need it.”
Efficiency and Teamwork in Action
Hunter-Reay elaborated, saying, “It’s a lot to get on top of because you have a massive group of people coming together that need to operate and execute as efficiently as possible in a very short amount of time. There’s a lot to be on top of here at Indy, which comes more naturally when you’re running the whole season.”
Cusick expressed optimism regarding the partnership and the spirit of teamwork that permeates through both the Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and Cusick Motorsports teams, anticipating another successful Indy 500. “I expect us to move to the front,” he stated. “We’ve got a couple of fast race cars and a great crew that knows how to support them. Last year, we led the race for 22 laps, so I’d love to do that again—especially the last lap.”
The Excitement of Race Day
The Indy 500 represents more than just a race for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing; it’s a testament to resilience, teamwork, and the unyielding spirit of racing. With seasoned drivers like Hunter-Reay and Harvey at the wheel, combined with a well-prepared crew committed to excellence, fans can look forward to an exciting spectacle filled with uncertainty and thrill.
