The Chinese company Unitree Robotics recently presented the GD01, a groundbreaking manned robot that merges bipedal locomotion with quadrupedal movement. This impressive creation resembles something from a sci-fi movie and is already available for purchase.

This robot is now a reality and ready for purchase. Unitree describes the GD01 as a robust machine made of high-strength alloys, weighing around 500 kilograms, including the pilot. To operate this mechanical marvel, one simply sits in the torso-integrated cabin. Priced at 3.9 million yuan—which translates to about 538,000 euros at the current exchange rate—Unitree claims it to be the world’s first mass-produced transformable mecha.

What can the GD01 do? In a promotional video, the robot is showcased walking upright on two legs and even demolishing a brick wall with one hand. Subsequently, it reconfigures its chassis to move like a true Transformer, utilizing four limbs in a seamless transition.
China’s Rise in Robotics
The GD01 emerges at a pivotal time, as Chinese robotics firms are increasingly outpacing their American rivals, thanks to lower production costs and accelerated manufacturing capabilities. According to consulting firm Omdia, Chinese companies are projected to account for nearly 90% of global sales of humanoid robots by 2025. Notably, Unitree shipped over 5,500 units last year, while major American firms like Tesla and Agility Robotics each delivered only about 150 units.
Comparative Pricing in Robotics
Exploring the price gap. Unitree’s entry-level humanoid robot, the R1, retails for approximately 5,500 euros. Its Chinese competitor, AgiBot, has a stripped-down version available for around 12,800 euros. Meanwhile, Elon Musk has estimated that Tesla’s Optimus could be priced between $20,000 and $30,000 in the future. The GD01, however, is designed specifically to enhance maneuverability in industrial environments, making it a unique offering in the market.
