During the  summer , it is common to see the wealthiest 1% of the globe enjoying the sea and sun aboard immense floating mansions known as  superyachts . These luxurious vessels often anchor near  paradisiacal destinations , such as the stunning coasts of the  Balearic Islands  or the breathtaking  Caribbean . However, not all tech magnates indulge in such ostentatious forms of leisure.

While billionaires like  Jeff Bezos ,  Mark Zuckerberg , and  Larry Ellison  are frequently sighted aboard their own superyachts, Microsoft founder  Bill Gates  has long maintained a more reserved profile. Despite speculation, Gates has never publicly acknowledged owning a yacht himself.

Yet, Gates has been linked to one of the most advanced and costly superyachts in the world: the  Breakthrough , a pioneering ecological vessel powered by a  hydrogen cell system . Currently, it is up for sale at an astonishing price of  $645 million .

Bill Gates and a Superyacht He Has Never Stepped On

Since the  Breakthrough  sailed out of the Feadship shipyard in Amsterdam in  October 2024 , whispers of Gates’ ownership began circulating. However, neither Gates nor the ship’s manufacturer have confirmed these rumors, leaving much speculation about the yacht’s true owner. Despite the absence of concrete evidence linking Gates to the  Breakthrough , one can understand why the floating palace piques interest.

The yacht’s hefty price tag of  $645 million  limits potential buyers to a select few. Its construction and ongoing maintenance would also require substantial financial commitment, attracting the attention of only the wealthiest individuals.

Moreover, Gates’ dedication to  clean energy  and innovative solutions supports the idea that a yacht like the  Breakthrough  could align with his vision for sustainable living. Nonetheless, the current status of ownership remains unconfirmed, leaving fans and critics alike guessing.

The First Yacht Driven by Hydrogen

Beyond its dazzling design and impressive size, perhaps the most significant achievement for Feadship was creating the propulsion system for the  Breakthrough . Unlike conventional yachts that utilize  diesel engines , this innovative vessel employs a  liquid hydrogen fuel cell system , stored at cryogenic temperatures below -253 degrees Celsius.

This pioneering technology necessitates precise management to ensure safety and efficiency, especially considering hydrogen’s volatility. The engine room is notably spacious, accommodating the advanced storage and conversion systems that are absent in traditional propulsion setups.

Crucially, the yacht’s entire electrical framework—from propulsion to lighting, and even air conditioning—operates on the electricity generated by this clean fuel, producing only water as a byproduct.

This system has set new benchmarks in modern yacht design and is celebrated as a remarkable advancement in  maritime transport . Jamie Edmiston, Executive Director of the company facilitating the yacht’s sale, praised the  Breakthrough  as “the most extraordinary yacht ever built and the one that will change everything,” according to a statement reported by Fortune.

A Floating Palace in a Sea of Luxuries

In addition to its groundbreaking ecological advancements, the  Breakthrough  does not compromise on luxury and extravagance, which are hallmarks of this elite category. Measuring  118.8 meters  in length with a width of  19 meters , the yacht boasts 15 lavish cabins accommodating up to 30 guests, along with provisions for 44 crew members to ensure 24/7 personalized service.

According to research published by Forbes Australia, among the yacht’s lavish amenities are five sun decks, along with two additional under-deck levels accessible via an internal elevator.  Fourteen balconies  provide stunning panoramic views from the cabins, while the main deck is designed as a striking apartment featuring two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a private gym, pantry, two home offices complete with a fireplace, and a comfortable living area.

Additional amenities include a fully equipped hospital for emergencies, a library filled with curated collections, a private cinema, swimming pool, jacuzzi, and a state-of-the-art gym. Designers at Redman Whiteley Dixon utilized light neutrals, marble,  rattan , smoked eucalyptus wood, and oak finishes to craft an ambiance of luxury and exclusivity—all for the modest sum of  $645 million .

In essence, the  Breakthrough  embodies a unique fusion of luxury and  sustainability , paving the way for future innovations in the nautical world. Its unprecedented design and ecological advancements not only celebrate opulence but also align with the pressing demand for environmentally friendly solutions. With its cutting-edge technology and luxurious amenities, the yacht truly represents the pinnacle of modern maritime life.
