The Rise of Murdoku: A New Era in Puzzles

Sudoku, introduced to the Western press in November 2004, has yet to encounter a challenger to its global throne. However, Montreal-based puzzle creator Manuel Garand has crafted a unique blend of Sudoku and Cluedo-style intrigue, giving birth to ‘Murdoku’. Released in Spain in October 2025 and with a second installment available starting July 1, Murdoku has remarkably become the best-selling non-fiction book in Spanish.

Where Does It Come From?

Though Sudoku has enjoyed two decades of dominance since ‘The Times’ started publishing it in 2004, its abstract nature—lacking narrative, characters, and settings—has left a gap in the puzzle market. Murdoku fills this void with added elements of storytelling and mystery, transforming the abstract into an engaging experience for solvers. It’s not just a numbers game; it’s an immersive adventure.

What Is Murdoku?

Murdoku retains Sudoku’s signature grid layout while swapping numbers for suspects. Each puzzle is a tiny investigation; by piecing together clues and scenarios, players must identify the murderer among various characters. As Sergi Álvarez, editorial director of Temas de Hoy, states, “You don’t just solve; you investigate.” This narrative dimension has significantly contributed to Murdoku’s commercial success.

The Figures Speak for Themselves

With an astounding 300,000 copies sold and 17 editions released, Murdoku has anchored itself as the top-selling non-fiction title in the Spanish-speaking world. It garnered acclaim during Sant Jordi 2026, indicating a growing international presence, particularly in the U.S. and U.K. Hachette has embraced the series, issuing two volumes with a third titled ‘Around the World’ planned for the fall. Álvarez suggests that this surge in popularity points to a long-lasting genre in the editorial landscape rather than a fleeting trend.

The Birth of a Phenomenon

Created by Canadian puzzle designer Manuel Garand, Murdoku was a direct offshoot from his earlier work, ‘Murdle,’ which has already sold over three million copies across 30 countries. The Spanish edition, published in October 2025 by Temas de Hoy, aimed to innovate beyond traditional puzzle styles and indulge the audience’s appetite for original content.

The Role of Social Media

Visually appealing with 208 full-color pages illustrating various crime scenes, Murdoku captivates not only puzzle enthusiasts but also booktubers. The engaging content has driven the hashtag #murdoku to accumulate millions of views on TikTok, where individual videos have surpassed 254,000 likes. This trend began when Spanish-speaking creators started solving the puzzles live, establishing a buzz around this new genre.

Álvarez notes that the book’s success didn’t erupt overnight but rather simmered gradually: “We are talking about a conversation that grew week by week.” The intriguing blend of puzzles and storytelling, coupled with visual appeal and social media momentum, has proven to be more than just a passing fad; it’s a solid venture into innovative entertainment.

In a world where puzzles are evolving, Murdoku exemplifies how blending genres can create compelling new formats. As more fans delve into these intellectually stimulating narratives, it remains to be seen just how far this genre can expand.
