Stellantis to Launch Affordable “E-Cars” in 2028

On May 19, Stellantis made a significant announcement regarding the future of electric vehicles in Europe. The automotive giant revealed plans for the production of “e-cars,” small electric vehicles priced under 15,000 euros, set to kick off in 2028 in Italy. This initiative aims to cater to the budget-conscious consumer in the mini-city car segment, marking a shift back to affordable vehicle offerings.

A Return to Affordability

The e-cars will be manufactured at the Pomigliano d’Arco facility, an establishment familiar with producing iconic models like the Fiat Panda. This venture signifies a noteworthy change in Stellantis’s strategy, moving away from an era dominated by expensive vehicle models. With its fourteen brands—including Peugeot, Citroën, and Fiat—the company is betting on these affordable e-cars to regain lost market share in Europe, having seen a decline over the past four years.

Competitive Market Dynamics

Stellantis is entering a competitive landscape, especially with Renault making strides in the affordable electric car market. Renault’s Twingo, anticipated in 2024, is expected to retail for around 15,000 euros post-incentives, raising the stakes for Stellantis. Bernard Jullien, an expert in the automotive sector, indicated that Stellantis is keen to “go lower” in terms of pricing, a strategy likely to shake up the market dynamics.

Innovating for the Future

Antonio Filosa, General Director of Stellantis, emphasized that these e-cars are designed to be compact, innovative, and accessible. They respond to the shrinking segment of small, affordable cars that has plagued Europe in recent years. This initiative also aligns with European Union directives mandating a higher percentage of electric vehicles in car manufacturers’ sales.

Recent Trends in Pricing

In recent years, the market for electric vehicles priced below 20,000 euros has expanded gradually, with recent discounts prompting several models to drop below 15,000 euros. For instance, Renault’s electric Twingo and Stellantis’s Citroën e-C3 showcase how manufacturers are trying to offer more budget-friendly options.

The success of Stellantis’s offerings, including a lower-cost Fiat Panda and an electric model from their Chinese partner Leapmotor, demonstrates a growing acceptance of affordable electric cars. Leapmotor’s T03 has been particularly successful in Europe, attracting buyers with a list price under 20,000 euros and, thanks to significant bonuses, was offered for less than 5,000 euros in Italy.

Looking Ahead

Stellantis aims to sell these e-cars in large volumes, which would be essential for regaining market share. Jullien suggests that this represents a significant shift for Stellantis, moving towards the “A segment”—the smallest class of vehicles—reflecting a growing demand for affordable options in the automotive market. As the landscape of European automotive manufacturing continues to evolve, Stellantis’s commitment to producing e-cars represents a forward-thinking approach to consumers’ needs and market demands.

As we near 2028, the anticipation around Stellantis’s e-cars will likely reshape perceptions of affordability in the electric vehicle sector, providing consumers with innovative and budget-friendly options.
