The complex beginnings of Montpellier and Zoumana Camara.

The 2024/2025 season has been a  rollercoaster  for Montpellier HSC, ending in a disappointing 18th place with  16 points  from 34 games and a staggering  79 goals conceded . Following this tumultuous performance, the club is determined to bounce back and prepare for their upcoming Ligue 2 campaign. This resolve led to the appointment of new head coach  Zoumana Camara  on  April 8 . Camara, aware that he is the third coach for the season, aims to foster a  collaborative management style  and reinstate values critical to  Montpellier’s identity . He stated, “This is one of the first clubs to prevent the title at PSG under the QSI era. I want to restore this state of mind and the values for supporters.”

Unfortunately, the task ahead isn’t easy. As Montpellier prepares for the next season, the club is dealing with significant player turnover. Key departures include  Joris Chotard  to Brest,  Othmane Maama  to Watford, and  Jordan Ferri  to Sampdoria, among others. In total,  16 players  have left, including high-profile loans and contract expirations. The club now finds itself in a position where it must rebuild a competitive squad on a  tight budget .

Recruitment Challenges and Strategic Signings

With the summer transfer window tightening, Montpellier has spent only  500,000 euros  to bring in  Nathanaël Mbuku  on loan from Augsburg. Although he was instrumental in  Saint-Etienne’s promotion two years ago , the squad requires more reinforcements to ensure they can navigate the challenges ahead. New signings like central defender  Julien Laporte  from Lorient and forward  Alexandre Mendy  from Caen are expected to add experience to a youthful team. Along with goalkeeper  Mathieu Michel  from AC Ajaccio, these new players aim to solidify their formation.

The club has also recruited five promising young talents, including  Everson Junior  and  Simon Ngapandouetnbu . Their aim is to create a balanced squad capable of a strong challenge in the  Ligue 2 , leveraging the talents of stayers like  Yaël Mouanga ,  Téji Savanier , and  Enzo Thato , who have remained with the club through this transitional phase.

Despite a strong preparatory phase, in which Montpellier recorded  four victories  in five games, the new season has not started as smoothly. The tactical formations, primarily oscillating between  4-2-3-1  and  3-4-3 , are still seeking the right equilibrium. Currently, the team has managed only one victory, earning  5 points  from five matches, placing them in a precarious position. They sit 14th, only one point clear of  Le Mans , which lies in the relegation playoff spot.

The alarming  goal-scoring drought  has become a focal issue for  Zoumana Camara , who acknowledged the team’s challenge in the final third. “We flirt with the lack of accuracy… and are struggling to find the fault,” he noted, remaining hopeful that adjustments can be made before their next match against  Bastia . With just  four goals scored  thus far, the club is actively considering adding a talented  ‘Joker’ option  to strengthen their attack, as emphasized by Camara himself.

The objective is clear: Montpellier must quickly rediscover its form to avoid another season of struggle. With an *uphill trajectory* that contrasts sharply against the performances of  AS Saint-Étienne  and  Stade de Reims , the pressure is mounting to forge a competitive edge. Although the situation is currently far from dire, the club understands that prompt  strategic adjustments  will be crucial for the upcoming fixtures. Fast decisions in the transfer market could be the pivotal step that Montpellier needs to regain its competitive spirit and foundation in Ligue 2.
