Denmark Sets New Speed Record at SailGP
The Denmark Rockwool team has made headlines in the sailing world by achieving a new speed record in the SailGP, a globally recognized circuit for catamaran races. The exhilarating milestone of 103.93 kilometers per hour was reached during the third race of the Sassnitz Grand Prix in Germany, which marked the eighth leg of the championship.
The opening day of competition saw an unexpected twist as the Brazilian team withdrew, paving the way for a French team to join the fray at the last minute. Much to their dismay, Spain’s SailGP Team faced a penalty for an early start in the first race. This setback was critical, as they missed the departure by less than a second, hindering their performance from the get-go.
This early miscalculation placed the ‘Gallos’ (Roosters) at a disadvantage, as they struggled for position early in the race. The first heat was dominated by Dylan Fletcher and his Emirates GBR team, but it was Erik Heil from Germany who surprised everyone by taking first place to delight the local crowd. Spain fought hard but finished the first race in a disappointing ninth position.
In an attempt to regain their footing, Spain came out strong in the second race, taking the lead at the first buoy. However, fierce competition from the British and French teams led to a loss of speed during a critical maneuver at the fourth buoy, forcing them down to fourth position. Despite a valiant effort, Spain concluded the second race in fifth place.
The unpredictable winds on Saturday played a significant role, complicating decisions and strategies at every turn. The third race mirrored the second in that Spain had another strong start, placing them among the leading boats initially.
In this race, Denmark’s incredible speed was on full display as they clocked in at 103.93 km/h, breaking the previous record set in France, which had been 99 km/h. The introduction of the 18-meter wing with T-FOILs for the first time this season was a game-changer, contributing to the record-setting speed.
Following buoy one, Spain managed a strategic move to lead for a while, engaging in an intense battle with the Australian and Danish teams. With only 10 meters separating them, Tom Slingsby from Australia shone brightly and ultimately won the race, putting pressure on Spain in the overall standings.
The fourth and final race took place under tense circumstances on Sunday, as Spain needed to make a statement to improve their ranking. However, the initially irregular start placed them amidst the mid-fleet. This race was marred by a significant collision between the United States and Emirates GBR teams. The Americans were penalized with 12 points due to the incident, impacting their overall positioning.
Despite this chaos, the ‘Gallos’ remained disciplined and focused, gradually recovering lost positions throughout the race. Ultimately, they ended this fourth regatta in fifth position. Meanwhile, the Australian team, led by Tom Slingsby, emerged as the day’s leader with 32 points.
As these teams gear up for the next leg of the competition, Denmark’s record-setting speed adds an exhilarating layer to the rivalry, showcasing the impressive skills and technological advancements in the world of sailing. The upcoming races are sure to be a spectacle, packed with thrilling moments and fierce competition as teams vie for supremacy on the water.
With this incredible achievement, Denmark has not only made a mark in the SailGP but also raised the stakes for future competitions. Every team will undoubtedly be looking to up their game as they prepare for the next challenges ahead.
