The football scene in the north of Peru is about to witness a monumental shift. The Regional Government of Piura has commenced the long-anticipated reconstruction of the Miguel Grau Stadium, with ambitious plans to transform it into a world-class sports venue.
With an investment nearing S/ 200 million, the initiative aims to provide the Atlético Grau club with a modern stadium that honors its rich history and devoted fan base.
The project has received official approval, and plans are already in place to enhance the current structure into an infrastructure boasting a capacity of over 20,000 spectators, fully covered stands, individual seating, certified Bermuda grass for official competitions, a video assistant referee (VAR) system, state-of-the-art LED lighting, giant screens, and specialized spaces for media coverage.
In addition to these upgrades, the renovation will entirely revamp the changing rooms, mixed zone, press areas, and access points, including evacuation routes and a new architectural facade.
Governor of Piura, Luis Neyra León, emphasized that this megaproject will not only benefit the Atlético Grau club but will also solidify Piura’s status as a pivotal location for hosting major sporting events in the northern region of the country.
“We are building a stadium that will not only meet international football standards but represents a justice act toward the history and passion of the Piuran people. This will be the new home of Atlético Grau and the sporting heart of northern Peru,” he declared.
The project began taking shape in January 2024, when the Regional Government signed an agreement with the Peruvian Institute of Sports (IPD), granting the administration of the venue for ten years. Since then, studies and technical documents have been developed, allowing for the official initiation of construction.
Construction is projected to take approximately 420 calendar days. During this period, the stadium will be ready to welcome thousands of fans yearning to experience their team playing in a premier venue. The reconstruction of the Miguel Grau stadium is also expected to boost the local economy, create temporary jobs, and enhance regional identity.
Inaugurated on June 7, 1958, the Miguel Grau Stadium has become a symbol of identity for generations of Piurans. Its construction was promoted in 1956 by then-President Manuel Prado y Ugarteche, aiming to encourage sports in a region rich in football tradition but lacking adequate professional spaces for practice.
With a capacity of 22,500 spectators, the Miguel Grau quickly established itself as the premier sports venue in northern Peru. For decades, it served as the backdrop for local championships, cultural events, and memorable matches that gathered thousands of fans, solidifying its role as a space for community and social unity.
Its leap to international prominence occurred in 2004 when it was chosen as one of the official venues for the Copa América held in Peru. To host the matches, significant infrastructure improvements were made, including upgrades to the stands, changing rooms, and general services. The tournament established the Miguel Grau as a reference venue in the South American circuit.
In 2005, its international prestige was reaffirmed as one of the venues for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, where young football talents showcased their skills before thousands of spectators and international media.
Today, after years of deterioration and neglect, the Miguel Grau Stadium is undergoing a comprehensive reconstruction process, with the ultimate goal of becoming an international standard venue that regains its prominence and once again serves as the sporting pride of northern Peru.
