“I wish them fair winds!” declares Clara Chappaz, the Minister for Digital Affairs.

“I wish them good riddance! Because nobody is above the law,” commented Clara Chappaz on June 4 during an interview on France Inter following the announcement from  Youporn  and  Pornhub . These adult sites have officially suspended their operations in France to protest the requirements mandating user age verification.

Chappaz continued, “If these websites prefer to pull out of France instead of protecting our children, they have no business being here.” Her emphasis was on the importance of safeguarding children from potentially harmful content available online, particularly on adult sites.

The adult entertainment websites have raised concerns about  privacy issues  and potential risks of  personal data leaks  associated with age verification mechanisms. However, Chappaz has firmly rejected these claims, stating, “It is too easy to hold adults hostage by saying ‘we don’t want to comply with our obligations.’ These are reasonable requirements.” She clarified that the law should prevent children from accessing content meant for adults and reiterated the importance of protecting minors.

Chappaz expressed her frustration over the sites’ reluctance to adopt effective  age verification methods . She pointed out that there are several viable solutions available, including  facial recognition ,  ID checks , and even  interactive methods  like hand gestures. Furthermore, she highlighted  Pornovore , an adult site that has successfully implemented various methods for age verification while maintaining user anonymity.

According to Chappaz, the other major platforms must realize their responsibility, stating, “They should not profit at the expense of our children.” She also stressed that these platforms would face sanctions from the Digital and Audiovisual Regulatory Authority (Arcom) if they failed to comply, including possible  blocking  of their sites.

This confrontation sparked a broad discussion regarding  responsibility  and  regulation  in the digital space. As the internet continues to evolve, balancing accessibility with  child safety  becomes increasingly crucial. The Minister’s strong stance signifies a potential shift toward stricter regulations for online content providers, especially in protecting minors.
