Connecting with the Stars: A Conversation with Astronauts from Sevilla
This past Tuesday, Daniel Castro, a 14-year-old aspiring aerospace engineer from Sevilla, had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: a live conversation with astronauts Jessica Meir and Sophie Adenot aboard the International Space Station (ISS). This event, part of the New Space & Solutions conference in Cartuja, Sevilla, was particularly timely given its close proximity to the recent Artemis II mission’s return to Earth. Daniel’s enthusiasm was palpable as he prepared to connect with the astronauts stationed approximately 400 kilometers above the Earth.
Daniel’s Journey: From Dreams to Reality
Initially dreaming of becoming an astronaut or a footballer, Daniel shifted his focus to astrophysics before ultimately realizing his passion for aerospace engineering. Currently balancing his studies at the Pablo de Olavide University, Daniel is involved in a research project on molecular simulation for hydrogen purification. His objective? To develop sustainable hydrogen-based propulsion systems for aviation. This groundbreaking work reflects not only his commitment to science but also a broader vision for a more sustainable future.
A Unique Experience: Asking the Astronauts
During the event, Daniel had the thrilling opportunity to ask, “What surprised you the most during your first days in space?” Both astronauts displayed warmth and enthusiasm, making the connection feel personal. Jessica and Sophie shared their awe of the stunning views and sensations of weightlessness. “Everything is surprising when you’re floating,” Jessica exclaimed, while Sophie humorously compared their experience to hanging upside down like a monkey. The excitement in their voices energized not just Daniel, but all those present in the auditorium.
Encouraging the Next Generation
Alongside Daniel, 17-year-old Alejandra Estévez, also an aspiring aerospace engineer, seized the moment to ask a poignant question: “What message do you have for girls aspiring to explore the universe?” The response was encouraging and powerful. One of the astronauts directly addressed Alejandra, urging young women to chase their dreams in space exploration without hesitation. “There’s a place for everyone here, and the work environment is incredibly fun. We all love what we do!”
The Earth’s Beauty from Above
One of the most touching moments of the event came when the astronauts described how Earth appears from space. Amidst the vast darkness of space, they saw a “perfect sphere uniting all humanity.” This profound imagery resonated deeply with both the audience and the young aspiring engineers, reminding them of our shared planet’s beauty.
A Glimpse into the Future
The conference showcased not only exciting scientific discussions but also the importance of inspiring the next generation. With key stakeholders from NASA, local government, and the Andalucía region participating, the event highlighted the relevance of space technology in everyday life. Both Daniel and Alejandra left the event fulfilled, knowing they had made a connection with the world of space exploration. A dream realized: mission accomplished.
The enthusiasm of these young minds reflects the future of the aerospace industry; with steadfast determination and support from figures like Jessica and Sophie, anyone can reach for the stars.
