Guatemala Extradites “Chele Peña” to the United States
On Friday, Honduran national Baldemar Roque Negrete, widely known as “Chele Peña,” was extradited from Guatemala to the United States to face federal charges related to drug trafficking. This significant move was facilitated by the Guatemalan Ministry of the Interior, which announced the transfer via a press release.
Allegations and Background
Between 2016 and August 2019, Roque Negrete was linked to a drug trafficking organization operating across South, Central, and North America. Guatemalan authorities claim that he played a crucial role in directing, managing, and supervising various criminal operations during this period. The U.S. judicial system regards these activities as a cross-border operational pattern, which provided substantial grounds for the extradition request submitted to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
Extradition Process
The extradition took place after he was moved from the Mariscal Zavala Preventive Detention Center in Guatemala by elite agents of the Guatemalan Penitentiary System. Upon arrival at the Guatemalan Air Force, officials from the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) took custody of Roque Negrete.
According to reports, the accused 43-year-old was known by multiple aliases, including Alex Javier Cardona Estrada, Byron Leonel Reyes Castillo, Auner Montoya Ordóñez, and Lucas Waldemar Roque Negrete. His apprehension on January 26 was part of an anti-drug operation in Zacapa, marking him as the first extraditable criminal from Guatemala this year.

The U.S. charges against Roque Negrete include conspiracy, manufacture, and distribution of five kilograms or more of cocaine, with the added aggravating factor of knowingly engaging in illegal importation into United States territory.
