San Diego Comic-Con Málaga 2026: A Bigger and Better Experience

The most ambitious pop culture event ever held in Spain returns in October 2026 with a significant expansion, featuring 19,600 square meters of surface area—nearly double that of the previous edition. With the addition of a new director, Fernando Piquer, the event aims to address the organizational challenges that plagued last year’s debut, which included long queues and extensive complaints.

Event Details: When and Where

San Diego Comic-Con Málaga will celebrate its second edition from October 1 to 4, 2026, at FYCMA, the Málaga Fair and Congress Palace. The announcement was made during a press conference at the Casa del Lector del Matadero in Madrid, where officials from the Junta de Andalucía, the Malaga City Council, and FYCMA outlined several new features aimed at improving the attendee experience.

Expanding the Space: From Congestion to Comfort

The most notable change for 2026 is the increase in exhibition space, rising from 10,800 square meters to 19,600 square meters by adding a second outdoor pavilion of 8,800 square meters. This expansion will enable the number of stands to double, catering to a wider array of exhibitors and fans alike.

The Gaming Plaza will see a staggering increase from 280 square meters to over 2,000 square meters, marking a more than 600% increase. This new space will provide a dedicated area for gaming enthusiasts. Additionally, the Ludic Plaza, featuring a “Sit&Play Area,” will also be separated into two pavilions. In response to last year’s feedback, Artists’ Alley will be expanded into a distinct outdoor area in the Village, highlighting popular artists and their works. The successful Meet the Artist space will also return, creating more opportunities for fan interactions.

Reflecting on the First Edition

The inaugural edition, held in September 2025, demonstrated significant interest in the event, with three out of four days sold out within 24 hours, despite not having confirmed guests at that time. However, initial criticisms suggested that the event, while massive in attendance, was aimed more at the general public than the dedicated fandom that traditionally drives such events.

Addressing Crowd Management Issues

Attendance figures are slightly contentious, with official counts ranging from approximately 95,784 to the Malaga City Council’s reported 120,000 attendees. This discrepancy highlights issues in crowd management, which led to over 550 complaints to consumer agencies about capacity limits and long waiting times. To address these grievances, an exclusive pre-sale of tickets will be offered to last year’s attendees as a gesture of goodwill.

New Leadership for a New Direction

In a significant shift, Fernando Piquer has been appointed as the new director, taking over from Javier Barberá. Piquer, the founder and CEO of Movistar Riders, one of Spain’s leading esports teams, brings a unique perspective to the role, focusing on logistical efficiency and media management. He emphasized a commitment to enhancing the overall experience for fans, indicating a “new stage” for the event.

With these changes, San Diego Comic-Con Málaga is poised to redefine the pop culture landscape in Spain, promising a more engaging, well-organized, and enjoyable experience for fans in 2026.
