The Recent Coahuayana Truck Explosion
The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) is being pointed as a likely perpetrator behind a tragic explosion of a van at community police facilities in Coahuayana, Michoacán, which resulted in the deaths of six individuals and injuries to eleven others. This incident has raised significant concerns about escalating violence in the region.
Authorities’ Investigative Findings
According to Carlos Torres Piña, the Attorney General of the State, the CJNG, under the notorious leadership of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” is suspected of orchestrating the attack that occurred on December 6. “Given the ongoing friction in the area, this aggression appears to be a deliberate act from the Jalisco group towards the community police of Coahuayana,” he stated.
The explosion was reportedly caused by a long-distance detonation device linked to this criminal organization. Authorities claim that they have already identified possible suspects involved in the activation of the explosive device.
Collaborations and Arrests
The investigation is being spearheaded by the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR), in close coordination with federal authorities. Torres Piña mentioned that six individuals have been arrested in Colima for their alleged role in the vehicle explosion. They are under investigation for weapon possession and attacking security forces.
Notably, Omar García Harfuch, the head of the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), emphasized that the investigation categorizes the explosion within organized crime rather than terrorism, which is not recognized under Mexican law.
Understanding the Criminal Landscape
The violence in Michoacán can largely be attributed to power struggles between the CJNG and its competitors, including the Tepalcatepec Cartel. These groups are fighting for territorial control, particularly for the strategic coastal areas vital for drug trafficking routes.
Expert David Saucedo has provided insights, indicating that Coahuayana serves as a crucial checkpoint along Federal Highway 200, which connects multiple municipalities along the coast. Control over this municipality is essential for the CJNG’s expansion plans. The geographical advantages allow for organized supply routes, thereby increasing the stakes in these violent confrontations.
The Role of Community Policing
The community police in Coahuayana, while ostensibly formed to protect local residents from drug trafficking, are suspected by some to actually consist of hired guns from local criminal groups. This complex web of loyalties and threats significantly complicates efforts to restore order in the region.
Interestingly, the mayor of Coahuayana, Andrés Aguilar Mendoza, is cited as the only individual aware of the community police’s origins and legality, shedding light on the politically charged and often opaque nature of law enforcement in drug-affected regions.
