As NATO soldiers from 17 countries engage in the Baltic Operations naval exercise, their training will take place in, on, and above the Baltic Sea until mid-June. The departure of warships from Warnemünde has attracted many spectators.
For the first time, Rostock serves as the launch point for one of NATO’s largest naval exercises: Approximately 50 warships , 25 aircraft , and around 9,000 soldiers are participating in “Baltic Operations” (BALTOPS) . This year’s exercise, which has been ongoing since 1971, aims to unite forces from 17 NATO and partner nations to enhance their collaboration in maritime operations, including submarine warfare , mine clearance , and air defense .
Coordination by the “Commander Task Force Baltic”
The exercise is coordinated by the stationed “Commander Task Force Baltic” in Rostock. The United States is taking overarching command of the operation. Vice Admiral Jeffrey T. Anderson of the US Navy describes BALTOPS as a “cornerstone” for transatlantic security.
Restrictions for Civilian Shipping Traffic
During the training period leading up to June 20 , there will be restrictions on maritime activities, including close coastal areas. The navy asks recreational boaters, sailors, anglers, and kayakers to maintain a safe distance from military vessels. This request aims to avoid dangerous situations arising from proximity to military ships. The navy has indicated an “increased volume of shipping” in the Rostock area.
