The Urban Environment Agency in Oslo is considering blocking areas around the walrus Freya – news Oslo and Viken – Local news, TV and radio

It is not many days since Freya arrived in the capital, but she has already caused a stir. At Frognerkilen, the 600-kilo animal has found itself at ease on piers and in several boats, and many have taken the trip to get a glimpse of this summer’s talk ice. But both professionals and authorities are worried about what could happen if the spectators get too close to the walrus. Many have snapped pictures of Freya while she has been in Oslo. Photo: Trond Reidar Teigen / NTB Close people can provoke escape situations where Freya injures herself, warns the Urban Environment Agency. – It can also lead to situations where the animal is considered to pose a danger to humans. This can trigger a desire for Freya to be killed, something we must avoid, the agency writes in a post on Facebook. They are now in dialogue with the police and the Directorate of Fisheries, and are considering blocking smaller areas. Keep at least six meters away Disturbances from nearby people and boats can stress Freya, but walruses do not normally pose a danger as long as you keep a good distance. The Urban Environment Agency now comes up with the following advice: Do not get closer than ten meters by boat, jet ski or similar, and drive at low speed. Do not get closer than six meters ashore. Do not bathe if the walrus is nearby. Do not make unnecessary noise. Be especially careful if you are in a kayak, paddle board or similar. Advice for boat owners Freya’s stay in Frognerkilen has already led to damage to several boats. And the police have, among other things, washed her away from a jetty. But it is important to avoid unnecessary disturbances, the agency believes. – Once she has settled into a boat, the damage has often already occurred. If she is chased from somewhere, there is a high probability that she will find another boat, so that the total damage will be greater than necessary. The insurance company If has already received several claims. Photo: Joshua V.
