What to Do If Your Train Is Canceled

If you find yourself facing a train cancellation, it’s crucial to know your rights as a rail traveler. According to Regulation (EU) 2021/782 by the European Parliament and Council, you have several options to address this inconvenience, especially if you arrive at your destination more than 60 minutes late.

Get a Refund for Your Ticket

Your first option is to request a full refund for your ticket. Under EU regulations, you can claim back:

  • 100% of the ticket price if your train is delayed by more than 90 minutes.
  • 50% of the price for delays over 60 minutes.

Be mindful that you have 30 days from the date of cancellation to submit this request. Make sure to keep your ticket and any communication regarding the cancellation for reference during the refund process.

Alternative Transportation Options

If you prefer not to take a refund, your train operator is required to provide you with alternative transportation to your destination. This could include:

  • Rebooking you on a later train.
  • Allowing you to change your route under similar conditions.
  • Providing alternative means of transport, such as a bus or taxi.

Always check with the operator regarding available options, as they vary by company and situation.

Meals and Accommodation Rights

If you experience delays, you also have the right to meals and refreshments based on your waiting time. If you have to remain overnight due to a cancellation, the railway company is obliged to provide you with accommodation, including:

  • The cost of a hotel or another type of accommodation.
  • Transportation from the station to the accommodation and back.

Keep your receipts for any expenses, as these may need to be submitted when claiming reimbursement from the operator.

Stay Informed During Massive Cancellations

In cases of widespread cancellations due to major events or accidents, check the railway operator’s communications frequently. They may provide updates or expedite claim processes, ensuring you are informed about your rights and the options available.

Taking action promptly can help you to navigate the inconvenient situation of a canceled train effectively. Know your rights and advocate for them to ensure your travel experience is as smooth as possible.
