Who plays with fire can burn, and who transports cars valued in millions of dollars also runs the risk of burning since the slightest carelessness can generate damage valued in thousands of dollars.

This is what happened to a passionate owner of a  RUF CTR ‘YellowBird’ , one of the most rare 80s models derived from the classic Porsche 911. After investing more than  $150,000  in maintenance tasks and a total repainting of his vehicle, the valuable car ended up damaged when being unloaded from the truck that transported it, much to the owner’s shock and despair.

An Icon of the 80s: The Ruf CTR ‘YellowBird’

The  RUF CTR ‘YellowBird’  is a modified version of the Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2, developed by the German firm  RUF , known for transforming Porsche vehicles into authentic beasts. Only  29 units  of this RUF CTR ‘YellowBird’ were constructed, making it one of the most coveted cars in classic auctions and a popular pick in car-themed video games.

Its exclusivity has led it to achieve historical figures: in March 2024, one of these units was sold for  $6.05 million , as reported by  Top Gear .

Despite being based on the chassis of the Porsche 911, the  RUF CTR  significantly differed in specifications. Its weight was reduced to  1,170 kg , thanks to the use of aluminum in several body panels and carbon fiber components. It mounted a six-cylinder boxer engine with double KKK turbocharger and a DME injection system derived from the Porsche 962 competition. All of this yielded  476 hp  of power and a maximum torque of  553 Nm , capable of exceeding  342 km/h  in official tests, surpassing the Ferrari F40 of its time.

From “Yellow Bird” to Elegant Black

The RUF CTR ‘YellowBird’ at the center of this narrative was originally sold with a bright  yellow  color, aligning with its moniker. Seeking a more sophisticated appearance, the California resident sent his unit to the RUF headquarters in Germany for mechanical adjustments and a sleek  black  repaint.

For many collectors, altering the original color of such an iconic vehicle may seem risky. However, in this instance, the change provided a unique touch of distinction.

As you can imagine, neither the transfer nor the restoration process came cheap. In total, the owner spent over  $150,000 , according to details from  Road & Track . Such restoration operations are common among high-value car collectors, who often send their vehicles across continents to ensure they are in the hands of certified experts.

A Very Expensive Carelessness

The tragedy occurred just when the owner was about to receive his RUF CTR back, now adorned in its new black coating. During the unloading process from the transport truck, the tires were improperly secured, causing the car to slide uncontrollably down the ramp.

The sports car painfully fell from an approximate height of  2.4 meters , hitting the ground on its rear bumper, while the front lifted at a  45-degree angle  on the truck.
