Ilia Topuria: A New Era in Mixed Martial Arts
Ilia Topuria has recently established himself as an indisputable figure in the realm of mixed martial arts (MMA) after his impressive victory over the Brazilian star, Charles Oliveira, at the high-stakes event UFC 317. This showdown took place at the renowned T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, marking a significant milestone in Topuria’s career as he added the lightweight belt to his record. Through this triumph, the Hispanic-Georgian fighter became the undefeated champion in two divisions simultaneously, now joining an elite group of fighters in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) that includes legends like Conor McGregor, Daniel Cormier, Amanda Nunes, and Henry Cejudo.
Topuria, now 28 years old, managed to fulfill his promise of a quick win over Oliveira, finishing him in the first round with a flurry of precise and powerful strikes. The fight commenced at a furious pace, with Oliveira—35 years old—attempting to seize the initiative through a physical confrontation. While the Brazilian landed a few blows, Topuria remained unfazed, taking control right from the outset.
The pivotal moment of the fight came when Oliveira attempted to ground the fight, relying on his famed Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to outmaneuver the featherweight champion. Nevertheless, Topuria showcased superior technical skills, successfully defending against a knee lock attempt that could have posed significant problems for him. Throughout the bout, the pressure exerted by Topuria was relentless. A well-timed combination of a hook and jab caused a significant injury to the right eye of Oliveira, leaving him visibly compromised.
At two minutes and 27 seconds into the first round, a swift sequence of punches led to a left hook that was quickly followed by a powerful right which sent Oliveira crashing to the canvas. Topuria wasted no time in capitalizing on this momentum, continuing to assault his opponent until the referee intervened, declaring a knockout and ending the contest.
Reflecting on his victory, Topuria stated, “I said it, I am a representative of the next new generation of mixed martial arts. I warned that it would be fast and fulfilled that promise.” His post-fight comments affirmed the tactical precision he employed throughout the match.
With this latest victory, Topuria has now elevated his undefeated record to 17 wins, with seven of those ending in knockout and another two by submission. On the other hand, Oliveira’s record stands at 36 professional victories, including 11 by knockout, 21 by submission, and four by decision, now tallying 11 losses. This championship win marks the second title for Topuria, who had previously captured the featherweight title in February 2024, defeating Australia’s Alexander Volkanovski. He has now become the first undefeated champion in two divisions in UFC history.
For Topuria, this victory in Las Vegas means considerably more than just acquiring another title. He passionately stated, “There are people who did not trust me, there are rivals fleeing me, but I am prepared for everyone. Now I want to defend my title. I’m ready for whoever is next. Now, I’m going to celebrate.” Before leaving the octagon, the Spanish fighter proudly waved the flag of Spain while wearing both championship belts on his shoulders, clearly showcasing his pride and determination.

Looking ahead, Topuria has set his sights on the magnificent Santiago Bernabéu stadium, expressing his desire to defend one of his titles there in the near future—an ambitious move aimed at raising the profile of MMA in Spain. After the fight, he did not hesitate to name potential rivals in the lightweight category, specifically calling out the British fighter Paddy Pimblett: "We have some princesses here. There is a blonde that every time he has to compete says that his back hurts."
As we witness Topuria’s meteoric rise in the MMA world, it’s clear that he’s not just asserting dominance; he’s also pioneering a new chapter for martial arts, particularly in Spain. With his determination and undeniable talent, the future looks exceptionally promising for this young champion.
