The Upcoming Demolition of the Ring Bridge: What You Need to Know
The city of Magdeburg is set to begin a significant demolition project on the Ring Bridge, located at Damaschkeplatz. A city spokesperson confirmed to MDR Sachsen-Anhalt on Friday that the initial ground work would commence immediately, with the major demolition efforts anticipated to start on June 16.
Preparations Underway for the Demolition
In preparation for the impending demolition, the city administration has already initiated preliminary work to set up a fall bed. This structure is designed to protect the streets, utility lines, and tram tracks located underneath the bridge. This proactive measure aims to minimize disruption and ensure safety as the demolition proceeds.
As part of the communication from city officials, it has been announced that the demolition activities will initially take place between 6 AM and 6 PM during the first week. However, from the following week onward, demolition work will be conducted around the clock to accelerate progress. The administration requests the public’s understanding and patience during this period of increased activity.
Details of the Demolition Process
The demolition will involve multiple excavators to systematically dismantle the superstructures and western pillars of the Ring Bridge. City officials have assured residents that this phase will last only a few days and take place between 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM. Importantly, the eastern abutments of the bridge will remain intact, serving as a foundation for two temporary bridges to be constructed later. The completion of the fall bed is expected by June 28, with the overall project estimated at around €564,000.
Temporary Bridges to be Built Starting June 23
Preparations for the construction of the temporary bridges will commence on June 23. These structures are slated to become operational by August 1, allowing for one-lane traffic in both directions. The designs include two steel constructions, each with a usable width of 3.50 meters and a total length of approximately 70 meters. Notably, the tram service on the west side will remain unaffected during this construction period, ensuring that public transportation continues without delays.
Demolition from the East Side The Ring Bridge will be demolished using multiple excavators, similar to the approach taken with the bridge at Petriförder. The actual demolition work on the superstructures and western bridge pillars is expected to last only a few days. This work will be carried out from the east side, allowing uninterrupted tram traffic on the west side of the Damaschkeplatz, enabling seamless passage along Adelheidring and Olvenstedter Straße. Live Stream the Demolition: Stay Updated Online
For those interested in following the progress of the demolition, the city has provided an online option. As announced on Tuesday, construction webcams have been installed around the Bridge. These cameras will offer a live feed of both the demolition of the deteriorating structure and the construction of the temporary bridges. This initiative enables residents and interested parties to stay updated on the project’s progress in real time.
The demolition of the Ring Bridge is a significant step towards improving infrastructure in Magdeburg. While the process may temporarily disrupt traffic and daily life in the area, the eventual outcome promises enhanced safety and accessibility for both pedestrians and vehicles. The city administration has expressed commitment to communicating updates regularly, ensuring residents remain informed and engaged throughout this transformative period.
With the commencement of demolition on June 16, Magdeburg is poised for a crucial phase of urban renewal, paving the way for future developments. The cooperation and understanding of the community will be vital as the city embarks on this project, aimed at upgrading key transport links while prioritizing public safety.
