
Tragic School Accident in Hürth: Community in Shock
On the afternoon of June 4th , a devastating traffic accident occurred on Frechener Straße in Hürth. A 20-year-old driver struck a group of elementary school children who were on their way to a sports facility. The police are currently investigating the incident and have ruled out any signs of foul play. “We are treating this as a traffic accident,” stated a police spokesperson later that day.Around 12:15 PM , children and teachers from two fourth-grade classes at Carl-Orff Primary School were waiting at the traffic light on Frechener Straße near the intersection with Theresienhöhe . They were heading to sports lessons at Stadion Alt-Hürth . While one group had already crossed at the pedestrian crossing, the second group was patiently waiting for the green light, according to witnesses at the scene.Emergency Response Actions
As the pedestrian signal changed, the children and their supervisors began to cross the street. Simultaneously, the driver approached in a BMW , traveling in the direction of Alt-Hürth. Moments later, the crash occurred, resulting in injuries to seven individuals, two of whom were seriously injured, including one school child. The injured girl required immediate resuscitation from paramedics on-site. A supervisor also sustained severe injuries.The alarm was raised at the fire brigade’s control center , leading to a major response ; two rescue helicopters, four ambulances, four emergency doctors, and fire service personnel rushed to assist the victims and console the shocked children.Serious Injuries and Medical Assistance
The girl who was critically injured was airlifted to the University Hospital . Officials indicated that her life was in danger . The injured supervisor was similarly evacuated by helicopter to Klinikum Merheim in Köln. Two other children were transported to local hospitals by ambulances.Emergency vehicles at the accident site.

Meanwhile, parents of the children involved were informed. Psychological support was provided to both parents and children, initially in a nearby field and later in school facilities. The city established a public hotline for the affected classes to provide additional support.Hürth’s Mayor, Dirk Breuer , visited the crash site. “This is a terrible and tragic incident,” he remarked. “We are praying for the critically injured and keeping them and their families in our thoughts.”Mayor Dirk Breuer appeared visibly affected at the accident site.
