Cause Under Investigation

The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation, with the  U.S. Coast Guard  indicating that the incident was likely “linked to hot work aboard a docked boat.” Mayor  Eric Adams  addressed the media, stating there is currently no suspicion of foul play and that the incident has not affected the facility’s operations.

DEP Commissioner  Rohit T. Aggarwala  expressed deep sorrow in a statement, emphasizing the lost worker’s more than  30 years  of dedicated service to the city. While the name of the deceased has not yet been released, Commissioner Aggarwala underscored that the entire DEP family is mourning the loss of a valued and experienced member of the Bureau of Wastewater Treatment.

Mayor Adams echoed those sentiments, expressing his devastation regarding the tragedy. He described the deceased as a devoted public servant who had dedicated  33 years  to New York City. Adams extended his condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time.

Environmental Impact Assessment

A representative from the local authority stated, “It’s important to note that no pollutants have been reported in the Hudson following the explosion.” The  U.S. Coast Guard  echoed this sentiment, noting that the situation is  stable  and no pollution has been observed.

The operations at the North River Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility remain unaffected by the explosion, further providing reassurance to the community and officials alike. This incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks associated with the work carried out by the Department of Environmental Protection and the  dedicated individuals  who ensure the safety and functionality of New York City’s water systems.
