Aragon, one of Spain’s autonomous communities synonymous with energy innovation, is elevating Zaragoza’s status as a European leader in urban energy transition. Under its ambitious initiative known as “Zaragoza Smart and Climate Neutral City“, the city recently kicked off the installation of photovoltaic canopies across public parking lots, effectively transforming temperature-rising vehicles into energy-generating solar parks.

This ambitious project incorporates photovoltaic technologies in four major locations—Miguel Servet, Pignatelli, Parque de Oriente, and Macanaz discretionary bus parking, totaling an impressive installed power of 2,484.72 kWp. In total, 4,176 solar modules will cover 10,816 square meters of parking canopies, producing approximately 3,638.5 MWh each year—enough energy to power about a thousand average households, according to city council data.
These canopies are not just functional; they’re designed to integrate seamlessly into Zaragoza’s urban landscape, ensuring that vehicles remain shaded and protected. Notably, out of 651 covered parking spaces, 40 will feature electric vehicle charging points, making this project a multifunctional asset.
