The Financial Burden of Death Insurance in Spain

A  45-year-old Spaniard  pays on average just over  6,000 euros  until the age of  84  for death insurance, which breaks down to approximately  154 euros  per month. However, this cost is not uniform across the country. With the constant rise in living expenses, the financial burden of dying is increasingly overwhelming in certain provinces. For instance, in  Segovia , individuals pay up to  7,554 euros  for this insurance, while in  Madrid , the cost is around  7,434 euros .

The Breakdown of Costs

Considering that this type of insurance is usually taken out at the age of  45  and is valid until the average life expectancy of  84 —which is the norm in Spain—the total outlay for  39 years  amounts to  6,020 euros . This payment guarantees a comprehensive service that covers  funeral expenses ,  legal assistance ,  psychological support , and assistance with  administrative procedures , among other offerings.

Why Costs Vary Across Regions

The discrepancy in prices arises because the final cost of insurance is adjusted, in part, to the  average cost of funeral services  in each province. As explained by  Pablo Pareles , director of  Roams Insurtech , an insurance brokerage that analyzed data from five major insurance companies in Spain, including  FIATC ,  Generali ,  European Insurance ,  Helvetia , and  DKV , these differences reflect various local economic factors.

The True Cost of Funerals in Spain

Without insurance, an average funeral can range from  3,500 euros  to  7,500 euros  in regions with higher population density, such as the  Community of Madrid ,  Catalonia ,  Cantabria , and  Asturias . These communities typically exhibit the highest costs due to elevated living standards and the higher operational costs of funeral homes. Furthermore, opting for additional services, such as  funerary monuments  like tombs or pantheons, can also escalate costs. According to data from Generali, choosing a niche in a specific area and extending the concession period set by the city councils for burial will incur additional expenses.

Disparities Across Provinces

This variability is why individuals from  Madrid  or  Segovia  face costs that are up to  34%  higher for insurance that offers the same coverage as in  Soria , where the average insurance cost is  5,027 euros , the lowest in the country. These disparities reflect the average  living standards  and costs associated with funeral homes and crematoriums, which are notably higher in large cities and metropolitan areas.

Cost Trends by Region

Following Madrid and Segovia, individuals in  Lleida  pay an average of  7,106 euros , while  Girona  residents face costs up to  7,100 euros . Conversely, areas like  Santa Cruz de Tenerife  (5,114 euros),  Zamora  (5,315 euros), and  Melilla  (5,336 euros) boast much lower funeral insurance prices. This information was compiled based on a mixed rate that includes coverage for funerals, transportation, and assistance, tailored for a  45-year-old individual .

The analysis of death insurance costs across Spain reveals the significant financial burden it places on families and individuals, reinforcing the necessity for thorough consideration when purchasing such coverage. With fluctuating prices influenced by regional economic factors, the importance of understanding the dynamics of these services cannot be understated.
