Let’s explain to you What are Claude’s Skills?, also called Skills in Spanish. This system allows you to create custom versions of Claude, an alternative to ChatGPT GPTs or Gemini Gems.
Skills are a very powerful feature, and they are also open to sharing on the Internet. Their applications are vast and imaginative. Essentially, they consist of a series of instructions that you can generate or add, which the artificial intelligence reads before answering your questions.
What are Claude’s Skills?
Skills or abilities are a system that allows you to create customizations of Claude or your unique versions of artificial intelligence. These skills are akin to ChatGPT’s GPTs but offer a more comprehensive framework. They can be simple files like a GPT or can encompass folders of instructions, scripts, or additional resources.
The goal here is that instead of using the generic version of Claude, when you load a skill, you interact with a much more personalized version that is tailored to your needs or considers a specific context. Skills guide Claude on how to perform particular tasks in a repeatable manner.
In essence, a skill is an encapsulated procedure that tells Claude how to carry out specific tasks, under what conditions, and with which rules you want him to execute, thereby eliminating the need for repetitive instructions in each conversation.
For instance, you could create a particular skill to learn the rules of a board game or improve your writing, review texts, or teach mathematics to your children. They serve as customizable tools that you can activate whenever necessary.
When you activate a Skill, Claude first reads the file for this skill, incorporating its instructions into the context window. If these instructions reference other files, Claude will read them, or if scripts are mentioned, the AI will also execute these.
What are Skills for?
To understand the purpose of Skills, you must first consider how Claude’s memory functions. Although AI retains some key data about you, it does not remember contexts from one conversation to another. Each time you start a chat, you begin from scratch.
This is where Skills become useful. If you frequently perform recurring tasks with Claude, you won’t need to provide detailed instructions every time. You can create a skill that includes all the precise instructions you need, which you can load whenever you wish.
For practical applications, consider that if you analyze the SEO of your writings, every time you need to do that, you would normally give instructions to Claude. If you load a Skill, however, you can simply activate it and write the text you want to analyze.
You can also utilize it to maintain your brand’s tone of voice, whether you’re writing emails or generating social media posts. A specific formula can be activated for analyzing data or generating code that aligns with your team’s internal standards.
A Skill can range from a simple set of instructions to a much more intricate framework, potentially including numerous reference files. Therefore, there are various ways you can configure it.

How to use Claude’s Skills

In Claude, you will find two types of Skills. One comprises pre-designed ones created by Anthropic to enhance its AI capabilities for specific tasks; these are automatically activated when you request a function for which there is a Skill.
Secondly, there are custom skills, which any user can create by writing instructions in Markdown. This does not require any programming knowledge; you can either type or upload an externally created Skill or even task Claude with creating one based on your specifications.
There are two methods for utilizing Skills. The first involves mentioning it explicitly so that your subsequent input considers these instructions. Alternatively, they will also activate automatically when you ask it to perform a task associated with a Skill, like generating web artifacts.

How Claude’s Skills are created

To create a Skill in Claude, you need to go to the Personalize section in the left column of Claude. From there, click on the Skills section, where you’ll see all the pre-generated skills that the AI has already created.

Once you’re in the Skills section, click on the + button. A dialog will open with three available options, allowing you to create one with Claude, manually write instructions, or upload a Skill you’ve downloaded from elsewhere.

If you choose to create a Skill manually, you’ll need to provide a name, a brief description, and write all the instructions you want to include. You can elaborate as much as necessary.

If you decide to upload a skill, you will need to upload a .md file containing that name, description, and the skills in YAML format. You can also upload them as .zip or .skill files, which should include a SKILL.md file with instructions along with additional files that are referenced in the instructions.

Who can use Claude’s Skills
Anthropic’s pre-designed Skills can be accessed by everyone, including free users. These Skills can handle tasks like creating Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF documents without requiring any payment. Claude’s skills require code execution to be enabled in the AI setup as the only prerequisite.
Custom Skills require a paid plan. You will need a Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan to create and utilize them. Skills are also available in beta for Claude Code users and all Claude API users using the code execution tool.
