Beware of Online Scams: The Drone Show Deception in Valencia
Shopping for tickets to an event that you hear about on social media can sometimes lead to disappointing encounters. This unfortunate scenario recently unfolded in Valencia, where numerous individuals found themselves victims of a sophisticated online scam. Instead of the anticipated drone show, attendees arrived at the City of Arts and Sciences to discover the event was a complete fabrication.
What Happened? On August 15, approximately 200 individuals congregated at the iconic City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, excited for a drone show they believed they had purchased tickets for. The tickets, reasonably priced at 17 euros each, were bought through platforms that appeared legitimate. Upon arriving, however, attendees found no evidence of the festival. Reports indicate that victims received confirmation messages upon purchase, but these turned out to be the first signs of a scam.
The police investigation revealed a disheartening truth: the festival was non-existent, and tickets were sold for multiple dates, including the 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 29th, 30th, and 31st of August, leaving many feeling duped.
The Medium of Deception It was discovered that the scam was heavily promoted via Instagram , which led to a wide audience being misled. Despite the promotion, there was no listing for such an event in any official calendars. The scammers cleverly used images and videos from legitimate events hosted by the Drone Show Festival, which conducts free drone displays. Unsuspecting victims mistook the promotion for an authentic event due to the credibility of these visuals.

They broadcast these warnings not long before the fake event occurred, but their alerts failed to deter the crowd. Many were left sweltering in the summer heat, frustrated and confused.
Further False Events Alarmingly, the deceit did not stop at Valencia. Promotional posts hinted at similar fraudulent events across other cities in Spain such as Seville , Barcelona , Madrid , and Bilbao . To combat these scams, the Union of Consumers of Valencia has announced plans to file a formal complaint with the National Court, seeking justice for those affected. They have also offered to assist victims in processing their claims at no cost.
The Rise of Online Scams The National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE) reported a staggering increase in online scams, with over 97,000 cyber incidents recorded in 2024 alone. This figure marked a 16% increase compared to 2023, which had already seen an increase of 24% from the previous year. The alarming trend indicates that three out of ten incidents were categorized as online fraud, and by 2024, this number swelled to more than four out of ten.
Phishing remains one of the most prevalent methods, with over 21,000 reported cases. There is also a notable rise in vishing attacks—fraudulent calls impersonating legitimate entities to manipulate consumers. Thus, protecting oneself from scams is imperative. Before purchasing tickets, people are encouraged to research sellers and verify event listings on public calendars to ensure authenticity.
For concert venues or any public event location, routinely checking the official program is a small step that can save attendees significant distress. For those who have already been victimized, it is crucial to report the incident to the National Police or Civil Guard, or reach out to INCIBE for assistance.

In an era of increasing digital transactions, awareness and vigilance are more important than ever for consumers. While many may believe they can easily spot a scam, the sophistication employed by these fraudsters continues to evolve. As the Valencia drone show incident illustrates, it is essential to remain cautious and thoroughly verify all online purchases before committing your hard-earned money.
