On  June 5, 2025 , twenty-five European consumer associations filed a complaint against  Shein  with the European Commission and consumer protection authorities, citing  “controversial practices.”  These associations are members of the  European Consumer Unions Bureau  (BEUC) and have raised concerns about the giant fast fashion retailer’s practices, particularly regarding the  endless display of products  on their website and the claim of  “low stock”  without any evidence. They argue that such techniques lead consumers to purchase more than intended, exacerbating the  environmental and social problems  associated with the fast fashion industry.

This isn’t the first time the  European Union  has scrutinized  Shein ; previously, in May, the corporation was accused of  false discounts  and misleading information concerning the sustainability of its products. The EU has warned of potential fines as part of this investigation. The BEUC is hopeful that this new complaint will provide additional evidence to aid in their ongoing investigation into these controversial practices.

In France, the consumer advocacy group  CLCV , a member of BEUC, also reported similar concerns to the  General Directorate for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) . Furthermore, Shein is the subject of a legislative proposal that aims to  regulate its practices , which was reviewed in the Senate recently.

 “European consumers would be better served if BEUC agreed to meet with us,”  Shein stated in response to the allegations through the  Agence France-Presse (AFP) . The company, which originated in  China  but is now based in  Singapore , has reiterated its commitment to  work collaboratively  with national consumer protection authorities and the European Commission, emphasizing its adherence to EU laws and regulations.

Despite these claims, Shein’s image has been marred by the  “refusal to engage”  from BEUC, which they find  “extremely disappointing.”  They point out that their platform has gained  increasing popularity  among European consumers, who recognize that Shein provides a superior  value for money. 

As the fast fashion debate rages on, it highlights the crucial intersection between consumer rights and sustainable practices. The concerns raised against Shein illustrate a larger narrative regarding the implications of fast fashion on both the environment and society. The legal challenges faced by Shein not only reflect consumer grievances but also signify a growing awareness among the public regarding the ethical dimensions of their purchasing decisions. The potential outcomes of these investigations and legislative actions could lead to  significant changes  in how fast fashion operates within the European market, ultimately affecting consumers and retailers alike.
