How the MouthPad Works
Controlled from the palate using the tongue, the MouthPad is an oral controller that comfortably fits over the upper teeth, weighing just around 10 grams. Once positioned, the device translates subtle tongue and head movements into cursor movements, allowing users to click, scroll, and drag items.
The design resembles a transparent splint and features a pressure-sensitive touch panel located on the palate, along with motion sensors to detect head turns.
Simple and Intuitive Operation
The operation of the MouthPad is quite straightforward. Movements of the tongue on the palate trackpad move the cursor, while head movements can also control the cursor. Pressing the tongue down equates to a left click, and a slurp gesture acts as a right-click. Alternatives and Availability
The MouthPad is not the only device of its kind. The MouthX controller, created in Spain, also empowers users to control cursors using their jaw and tongue. However, the key difference lies in design: while the MouthPad mimics a laptop trackpad with touch controls, MouthX utilizes two joysticks for cursor manipulation.
Current Limitations: Unfortunately, as of now, the MouthPad is only available for purchase within the United States. The company adheres to American regulations and has not yet tailored the product for European or other markets.
Pricing and Customization
The MouthPad is priced at $1,400, but purchasing two units drops the total to $1,900. The high cost is attributed to the custom design. After purchasing, customers receive instructions to share with their dentist for a 3D scan of their mouth, which is then used to create their personalized controller.
