The first  Nobel Prize  of 2024 in Physiology and Medicine has been awarded to three distinguished scientists:  Mary E. Brunkow ,  Fred Ramsdell , and  Shimon Sakaguchi . Their pioneering research has illuminated the complex mechanisms underlying  peripheral immune tolerance —a crucial factor in preventing the immune system from damaging the body through  autoimmune diseases .

The Discovery: The Nobel Committee recognized the significant advancement in our understanding of regulatory T cells, often referred to as the  Guardians of the Immune System .
