The forest fire that ignited on Thursday in La Mierla, Guadalajara, has now entered its fifth day, wreaking havoc across the landscape. As of Monday, more than 26,000 hectares have been consumed by the flames, prompting the evacuation of approximately 1,200 residents from the vicinity. This incident marks the largest wildfire in the history of Castilla-La Mancha, according to regional president Emiliano García-Page.

In response to this unprecedented situation, President Page reported a “historic” mobilization of firefighting troops across the region. He expressed that all involved personnel are “enormously motivated and excited” to tackle this severe crisis. The protective measures for human lives are being prioritized, despite the extensive damage to the forest and surrounding countryside.
Evacuation and Fire Perimeter
By late Sunday, the Infocam Plan raised the alert to level two, activating further response mechanisms, including aerial firefighting efforts. This morning, two aerial units rejoined the battle, supported by a ground force consisting of fifty units and 278 firefighters. Currently, the fire perimeter stretches an estimated 120 kilometers, leading to the evacuation of 28 towns impacted by the encroaching flames.
Weather Conditions and Future Risks
Weather predictions have exacerbated concerns, with forecasts indicating a return to high temperatures that could worsen the situation. Consequently, firefighting resources are being “resized” to ensure they are adequately equipped to manage the fire effectively. The risk level for wildfires continues to remain at an extreme rating across much of Castilla-La Mancha, particularly in the provinces of Albacete, Ciudad Real, and Toledo.
Prioritizing Safety
President Page has assured the public, “We are going to be able to with the fire.” He emphasized that once human lives are secured, the immediate focus will shift to protecting urban centers, which are currently flanked by flames. About 30 population centers are believed to be surrounded by the fire.
