Capturing El Costeño: The Arrest of a Key Suspect in Senator Uribe’s Assault
On July 5, 2025, authorities successfully executed a police operation leading to the arrest of Elder José Arteaga , known as El Costeño . This individual was wanted for his alleged involvement in the attack on Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay.
The capture took place in the El Muelle neighborhood of Engativá, Bogotá. The National Police coordinated the operation, which involved multiple search warrants being executed simultaneously at various locations.

Police arrived at the location where Arteaga was believed to be hiding. His rights were acknowledged and detailed, following an Interpol red notice that had been issued to prevent him from fleeing the country. This pivotal moment came nearly a month after the attempted magnicide against Senator Uribe, highlighting the authorities’ commitment to apprehending those involved.
The police utilized sophisticated detection methods, including thermal vision drones , to locate El Costeño. Reports indicate that a critical phone call acted as a linchpin during the investigation, leading to his apprehension. A reward of $300 million was also announced for anyone who provided information aiding in his capture.
In the hours following his arrest, officials provided an update confirming the significance of this capture in relation to the ongoing investigation into the attack against Senator Uribe.
“This operation highlights our commitment to addressing the leadership structure within criminal organizations,” stated Deicy Jaramillo , a representative from the police’s territorial security unit, during a press conference where she elaborated on the details of the capture.
Investigators revealed that El Costeño was believed to have coordinated the attack and was responsible for identifying and delivering a firearm to a 14-year-old who allegedly executed the assault against the senator at El Golfito Park in the Modelia neighborhood, Fontibón.
Following his arrest, El Costeño is scheduled to be presented before a judge for legal proceedings concerning serious charges including attempted homicide and illicit use of firearms. Authorities also noted the involvement of minors in these criminal acts.
