Özgür Özel’s Eid Message: The Struggle Will Continue Until the Junta is Dismantled

Economic Crisis Amidst Political Turmoil

In a compelling statement, CHP leader  Özgür Özel  addresses the dire  economic situation  that Turkey faces following the  March 19 coup  attempt. He emphasized, “Our economy, which was already struggling, became dire post-coup.” The effects of this political upheaval have trickled down, leaving many citizens in a state of despair. The middle class has dwindled, reducing many to  poverty , while those already marginalized are grappling with severe deprivation. With the  minimum wage  eroding by the day, workers and retirees are unable to celebrate  Eid  properly, often having inadequate spreads for festivities, and struggling to meet their basic needs.

78 Days of Resistance

Özgür Özel underscored the  ongoing resistance  against the political establishment that he claims has usurped the citizens’ democratically bestowed rights. “The coup attempt on March 19 will be remembered as a dark chapter in our democracy,” he asserted.  Özel  highlighted that despite the intimidating presence of the junta, the people have not succumbed to fear; they have fought back with unwavering resolve. “For 78 days, our struggle has continued, and it will not cease until the junta is dismantled and Turkey shifts back to a functioning democracy and legal order,” he declared. This continues to fuel the CHPs commitment to oppose the current regime and seek justice.

No Joy Without Justice

In light of the current circumstances, Özel lamented the lack of  happiness  among the populace, especially on what is traditionally a joyful occasion. Mentioning the incarceration of 11 municipal heads and his  presidential candidate  Ekrem İmamoğlu, he asserted, “The  Eid  celebration feels distant as long as those in power suppress justice.” He emphasized the belief that without fairness, there can be no true  prosperity . Consequently, the CHP has decided to refrain from celebrating the holiday with any other political party this year. “Bayram hasn’t reached those suffering from poverty and injustice, nor can it be a cause for joy until  income equity  and  social justice  are reinstated in society,” he added, echoing the sentiments of many disenfranchised citizens.

Özel communicated that it remains imperative to continue the fight alongside the citizens of Turkey. “We are close to lifting the dark clouds that loom over this nation and awakening our people from this long-standing nightmare,” he stated. The CHP leader expressed hope that  justice ,  democracy , and  prosperity  would eventually prevail, leading to authentic celebrations in the future. “On that day, we will celebrate our  Eid  genuinely,” he concluded.
