Celebrating Argentina’s Flag Day in Rosario: A Highlight of National Unity
On June 20, Rosario, the heart of Santa Fe province, hosted an inspiring ceremony commemorating Flag Day. The event commenced at 10:15 AM with the much-anticipated presence of Vice President Victoria Villarruel. This appearance came on the heels of a week marked by uncertainties regarding government representation at the ceremony, further stirred by President Javier Milei’s decision to host a separate event in Buenos Aires at the same time.
As the event kicked off, Governor Maximiliano Pullaro delivered a warm greeting to the military grouping, 20 de Junio, which helped set the tone for the ceremony. After this, Vice President Villarruel joined local political leaders in singing "Aurora", followed by the solemn hoisting of the national flag. The moment was heightened as they transitioned into the iconic "Himno Nacional Argentino".
Before the ceremony, Mayor Pablo Javkin voiced strong criticism regarding Milei’s absence, expressing that the heart of national celebrations should resonate from Rosario. "I believe that everyone should be here today; the events of June 20 are and must be in Rosario. The capital has numerous events, but June 20 is ours." His remarks drew further attention to Milei’s decision to forfeit his presence, a move that many interpreted as a significant political statement.
According to sources close to Villarruel, her participation was a personal initiative rather than a formal assignment from Casa Rosada, which had coordinated with the Municipality of Rosario for her involvement in the celebration.
As the only representative of the national executive at the official event by the Monument to the Flag, Villarruel’s distinct agenda was highlighted. Tensions between Milei and Villarruel surfaced during a previous event when the president notably ignored her and Jorge Macri, the mayor of Buenos Aires, creating a palpable atmosphere of discord.
The relationship between the political pair of La Libertad Avanza has reached a critical juncture, marked by mutual avoidance except during formal institutional gatherings. Their last public appearance, prior to the Flag Day event, occurred during the ordinary sessions of Congress on March 1.
The commemoration commenced with a salute to troops, which was followed by the flag-raising ceremony, the singing of "Aurora", and the beloved "Himno Nacional Argentino". A religious invocation followed, after which Mayor Javkin delivered a speech before handing the podium to Governor Pullaro.
Later that day, more than 8,000 students from ten provinces participated in the traditional pledge to the flag, one of the most significant moments of the day. By noon, the National Park of the Flag transformed into a vibrant space for community celebration, free and accessible to the public.
The festival offered an array of activities, including performances by renowned artists such as Coti Sorokin, Antonio Tarragó Ros, and Santiago Motorizado, alongside local talents. Additional attractions featured traditional dances, as well as a fair for entrepreneurs.
Food lovers were in for a treat, with 14 stalls serving delicious traditional sweets such as pastries and empanadas, complemented by 20 stalls dedicated to savory dishes. Notably, a contest for traditional grilling (asado) featured 75 teams, showcasing both ground level and elevated grills.
Reflecting on the past year, Minister of Culture Susana Rueda noted that 100,000 people participated in the festivities, and plans were made to exceed that number in this year’s celebration.
This year’s Flag Day served not only as an opportunity for national pride but also as a reflection of the ongoing political dynamics within the country, underpinning the importance of unity in even the most challenging times.
