The skincare routines popularized by TikTok have no advantages for the younger generation. This has been demonstrated by one of the first studies on the topic.

With the rise of social media, especially platforms like TikTok, skincare routines have gained immense  popularity . These routines attract not only adults but also  teenagers  who are looking to achieve a flawless complexion. Social media influencers often showcase their elaborate skincare rituals, featuring multiple products applied in intricate layers.

While some skincare habits may be effective for adults, a recent study indicates that popular skincare trends on TikTok offer little to no  beneficial effects  for younger users. Conducted by researchers from  Northwestern University  in the United States and published in the journal Pediatrics, this study sheds light on the potential risks of excessive skincare product use among adolescents.

An Average of Six Different Products

To conduct their research, the team created  fabricated TikTok accounts  supposedly belonging to 13-year-old children and gathered a sample of 100 skincare routines featuring minors. A significant majority of the content was posted by  girls , ranging in age from seven to eighteen years. The study revealed that these young influencers tend to use an average of  six different skincare products , with an average cost of  €147  per regimen.

High Risk of Irritation and Allergies

The implications of following such expensive and extensive skincare routines are not merely financial. The majority of these products harbor a  high risk  of causing  skin irritations  and  allergies , and a mere 26% of daytime products included  sunscreen , a vital component for all age groups, particularly children.

“The risks associated with using these products, particularly for young girls, far outweigh any marginal benefits they might derive from active ingredients,” stated Molly Hales, the lead author of the study, in an interview with The Guardian.

The UK-based media outlet also spoke with dermatologist  Tess McPherson , who was not involved in the study. She highlighted that the research findings confirm a rising trend of young individuals seeking consultations for  skin irritations . “We’ve seen an enormous increase in the number of individuals aspiring for perfect skin, devoid of any imperfections. We know that this is impossible and, in many ways, unnecessary—it doesn’t lead to greater happiness,” she added.

To promote safer skincare practices for the youth, Molly Hales recommends using a  gentle cleanser  one to two times a day, along with the application of  sunscreen . This streamlined routine minimizes the risk of potential skin issues while still providing adequate care for delicate skin.
