A binnenschiff (inland vessel) collided with a bridge over the Dortmund-Ems-Kanal in Lingen during midday. According to police reports, there are no injuries. An expert has been commissioned to assess whether the bridge is at risk of collapse.
Currently, a collapse cannot be ruled out, as stated by a police spokesperson to NDR Niedersachsen . The main girder of the bridge, located near the town center, has sustained significant damage, with the steel girders being cracked. Reports indicate that the vessel did not completely fit beneath the bridge, partly because its stabilizers were not lowered prior to passing under.
The Bridge Appears to Have No Support Pillars
According to a police spokesperson, the city’s public works department has mobilized resources in response to the incident. The Water Police from Meppen is conducting an investigation into the matter. The bridge, which is located in close proximity to the Emsland-Arena , spans the Dortmund-Ems-Kanal. Notably, the bridge lacks any supporting pillars. Footpaths for pedestrians run beneath the bridge, as can be viewed in images and satellite photos available on mapping services such as Google Maps .
Detours Established
The Lindenstraße (L60), which crosses the bridge, is closed to vehicular traffic, while the Dortmund-Ems-Kanal at Lingen has been shut down for shipping traffic. Detours have been established for both vehicles and pedestrians, directing them via the Emslandarena to ensure safety and accessibility.
