San Juan de la Rambla Celebrates 100 Years of Villa Status

On Sunday, August 17, the town of San Juan de la Rambla will mark a momentous occasion—the first centenary of its designation as a Villa. This title was bestowed in 1925 by King Alfonso XIII in recognition of the town’s growing agricultural development and unwavering loyalty to the monarchy.

The highlight of the centennial celebrations is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Rosario Oramas de San Juan square. This event aims to encapsulate the rich history and evolution of San Juan de la Rambla over the past century, according to a press release from the City Council.

Historical Reflection and Celebration

Notably, the evening will include a historical reflection led by José Antonio Oramas, a beloved local figure. Additionally, Pedro Ángel Gómez, the official chronicler, will discuss advances made leading up to this significant celebration. Attendees can expect an emotional atmosphere filled with moments that aspire to be regarded as a historical milestone.

The cultural program features a dance poem titled “San Juan de la Rambla,” adapted from Pedro García Cabrera’s work “Return to the Island.” It will be recited by Loly Armas and performed by the local choreographic group Titanium. Moreover, the theatre piece “100 years ago” will engage local acting groups, La Chopyro and Alhóndiga.

Musical Highlights

The evening’s crescendo will be the premiere of the Symphonic Poem titled “From the Sea to La Cumbre,” composed by José Luis Peiró specifically for this centenary. This ambitious piece will see a collaborative performance from two local bands: AA Alcaraván and March XIX of March. Their joint performance promises to be a mesmerizing addition to the celebration, showcasing local talent and community spirit.

Esteemed Guests

Important figures such as Fernando Clavijo, the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, alongside Rosa Dávila, the president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, will be present to highlight the significance of this occasion for both the local and regional communities. Their collective speeches are expected to underline the importance of unity and cultural pride.

Royal Recognition

Adding gravitas to this celebration, the City Council has announced that His Majesty the King holds the Honor Presidency of the Centennial Commemorative Committee. This royal endorsement elevates the event’s significance even further. Although the King cannot attend due to scheduling conflicts, he has extended heartfelt greetings and congratulations to the people of San Juan de la Rambla through an official communication from his household. This acknowledgment affirms the town’s historical heritage and its relationship with the monarchy.
