Samsung has just unveiled its latest foldable offerings, introducing not just two, but three models this time, with the Galaxy Fold8 featuring an innovative passport-type format. This design is more square and compact when folded and offers a panoramic experience when opened. As we explore this new format, two pressing questions arise: why this format, and crucially, why now?
A New Direction in Foldable Design
Samsung has been a trailblazer in folding technology, sticking to two distinct formats over eight generations: the Fold and the Flip. The introduction of a third model marks a significant departure, particularly as Samsung typically sets the trends rather than following them. This passport format wasn’t created in isolation; it was first explored by competitors like OPPO and Huawei. Notably, Samsung’s Fold8 will be the first of its kind available in Spain.
Timing: Bold Moves Amidst Challenges
Given the ongoing global crisis impacting component availability, alongside rising prices, it raises eyebrows that Samsung chooses now to launch three new foldable phones. Javier Vitón, the product manager at Samsung Spain, confirmed that even in challenging circumstances, the firm remains committed to growth and innovation. “We believe it is essential to continue expanding with differentiated proposals,” he emphasized.
A Foldable for Every User
The new Fold8 aims to cater to a broad audience. Since its initial release in 2019, Samsung has consistently distinguished between user types: the Fold attracts productivity-focused individuals, while the Flip appeals to a younger, price-conscious demographic. The Fold8’s passport format lands somewhere in between, boasting a substantial display while providing greater portability than earlier iterations.
Javier Vitón noted that “we don’t view our foldable range as a hierarchy of devices but rather as tailored devices for a variety of users.” The Fold8 Ultra is for those requiring maximum functionality, while the new Fold8 excels in multimedia consumption, with the Flip focusing on a socially expressive yet economical approach.
Addressing the Elephant in the Room: The Foldable iPhone
Another significant reason for the timing of the Fold8 launch relates to industry speculation surrounding Apple’s anticipated entry into the foldable market. Leaks suggest that Apple’s foldable iPhone may also adopt a similar passport-style format. This prompts the question of whether Samsung aimed to establish a solid presence in this category before Apple potentially disrupts the market.
According to Vitón, “We base our decisions on documented user behavior and what we believe may suit them best. This immersive format promises a different experience.”
A Strategic Future
Samsung’s swift introduction of the Fold8 exemplifies its strengths in folding technology, manufacturing capabilities, and an established supply chain. Rather than waiting to react to competitors like Apple, Samsung is set to lead the market with a robust, tried-and-tested product.
Interestingly, the new foldable retains the original Fold name, a move signaling its position as the new standard rather than a mere experimental addition. Overall, the Fold8 encapsulates a clear vision for evolving user interaction with mobile devices.
