“Legends shock”: River Plate’s glories will be measured against those in Barcelona

On Saturday, July 19 at 4:00 p.m. (Argentine time), the Mâs Monumental stadium will be the stage for a  unique meeting : the  “clash of legends”  between glories of  River Plate  and  FC Barcelona . This historic event marks the first time that the legends from both institutions face off on Argentine soil, as well as the  official debut  of the Catalan side in this category in the region.  Disney+  will be broadcasting the event live.

For River Plate, a roster rich in  legendary players  has been summoned. Among the stars expected to take the field are  Ariel “Burrito” Ortega ,  Enzo Francescoli ,  Pablo Aimar ,  Jonatan Maidana ,  Fernando Cavenaghi ,  Leonardo Ponzio ,  Marcelo Barovero ,  Alexander “Chori” Dominguez , and  Rodrigo Mora . These names not only represent skill but also a  deep emotional connection  to the club and its fans.

On the other side,  Barcelona Legends  bring a diverse mix of international footballers and former icons of the Catalan club. Players such as  Edgar Davids ,  Gaizka Mendieta ,  Frank and Ronald de Boer ,  Phillip Cocu ,  Edmílson ,  Vítor Baía ,  Nolito , and  Sergi Barjuan  form the robust lineup to be led by coach  Chapi Ferrer . Notably,  Juan Pablo Sorín , who has also proudly worn the River jersey, adds further intrigue to the match-up.

Though this encounter is presented as a friendly, it revives  historical ties  between two clubs that have shared several players over the years.  Javier Saviola ,  Sorin ,  Javier Mascherano ,  Roberto Bonano , and  Alexis Sánchez  are just a few names that have left an indelible mark in both  Monumental  and  Camp Nou . The emotional weight of such an event will undoubtedly resonate with fans in attendance.

The “Bunny” Saviola was originally slated as one of the star attractions of the event, but it has been reported by the Catalan newspaper  Sports World  that he will not participate due to “agenda problems.” Saviola is committed to an annual event he co-organizes with  Javier Zambrotta  at his academy in Venice, Italy. Similarly,  Ronaldinho , another big name expected at Núñez, will also be absent; he will be engaged in a charity match in Manaus.

The appointment at the  Mâs Monumental stadium , which can accommodate more than  85,000 spectators , promises an unforgettable experience. After renovations, it is now the largest sports venue in South America. The last time FC Barcelona played in Argentina was in  1964 , adding a layer of excitement and anticipation for fans eager to witness this unique event.

Following this match, the Barcelona Legends team will head to Mexico for another friendly against the legends of  Tigres Club . Scheduled for Sunday, August 31, the game will feature stars like  Andrés Iniesta ,  David Villa ,  Edgar Davids , and  Rafa Márquez  among others. On the Tigres side, legends such as  Lucas Lobos ,  Jesús Dueñas , and more will take to the pitch, turning this into a  celebration of football history  across regions.

The event is being dubbed “A story to frame. A legendary party,” as it aims to unite generations of fans and celebrate memorable moments through the most iconic players of both clubs. Beyond the final score, the aim is to underscore the  greatness of River Plate  and  Barcelona , two historic giants of world football.

The expectation surrounding this event is palpable, with ticket sales indicating overwhelming demand.
