A Tragic Fire in Croix-Rouge, Reims
In the early hours of June 6th, a devastating fire broke out in the Croix-Rouge neighborhood of Reims, leaving at least four dead , including a child. This tragic news was confirmed in a statement released by the prefecture of Marne . Two adults were taken to the hospital in critical condition , while 14 others sustained minor injuries. The fire has since been extinguished.
Extent of the Damage
The fire originated in an apartment on the fourth floor of a residential building located at 6 allée Edgar Degas , quickly spreading to the upper levels. According to the prefecture, twelve individuals , comprised of both children and adults, suffered minor injuries. A total of 37 people were assisted by emergency responders. Thankfully, the fire has been successfully extinguished.
By Friday morning, firefighters were still conducting assessments and clearing debris from the affected apartments. Approximately forty residents were accommodated in the Saint-Thierry gymnasium , coordinated by the Red Cross and facilitated by the local authorities.
Eyewitness Accounts
Residents living nearby recounted their experiences. “We were woken up by a woman screaming,” said Victoria and Isabelle. “We saw smoke rising and quickly grabbed our belongings and pets before heading out.” They reported hearing a loud explosion, which intensified their fear. After enduring a long night outside, the two women were eventually allowed to re-enter their home as the smoke cleared.
Victims from Different Households
The circumstances surrounding this tragedy remain unclear. Arnaud Robinet , the mayor of Reims, who visited the site during the night, confirmed that the victims were “not from the same family.” Among them was a child found in bed, one person who fell from a window, and two others who succumbed to cardiac arrest .
“There’s a significant amount of fear in the air this morning,” reacted Robinet, emphasizing the trauma experienced by the community. To address immediate needs, he opened the gymnasium to accommodate those affected.
The damaged building is situated in a working-class neighborhood , currently undergoing urban renewal initiatives. “This is not a dilapidated structure. It has undergone renovations and is secure,” stated Robinet, dismissing any concerns regarding the building’s safety.
Support for the Displaced Residents
The prefect of Marne elaborated that affected residents were able to find temporary relief and breakfast at the gymnasium. “We are organizing the day to ensure those needing medication, and ultimately all residents, can gradually retrieve some of their belongings,” assistant prefect Henri Prévost noted. However, it is “unthinkable at this time” for these individuals to return to their homes for the foreseeable future.
Plurial Novilia , the social housing provider, will work with the city and prefecture to assess the needs of the displaced residents. Some might find accommodation with family or friends, while others may receive assistance through their insurance. “Depending on the circumstances, the social landlord will also provide available apartments,” added the prefect.
The community stands united in the face of this tragedy, reaching out to provide help and support for the affected individuals and their families, aiming to restore a sense of normalcy in the wake of despair.
