Come, come…and I brought electric, gasoline and hybrid versions.

This is what Jaecoo could say about its arrival in Spain and, more specifically, about the Jaecoo 5, the new SUV from the Chinese company. A compact option that allows the firm to open the market right where they can do the most damage. The compact SUV market is one of the most competitive in Europe, if not the most.

Jaecoo’s proposal, of course, goes directly to the heart of the European  consumer’s  doubts. Two cars that, each in its own way (and little trick), will sell right on the border of  €20,000 .

Last April, my colleague Javier Lacort visited the Shanghai Motor Show and tested the Jaecoo 5 EV. He described it as “the SUV that no longer asks for permission.” Now, having experienced both electric and gasoline versions, I understand what he meant. The  finishes  signal a new level of sophistication; while there are no luxuries, there is a notable sense of  discretion .

The brand’s prices start at €27,500 for the gasoline version and €35,500 for the electric version. However, they attract consumers with the tempting offer of €19,990 for either variant. This strategy aims to flood the market initially and raise brand awareness.

The second price includes aid through the MOVES III Plan, reducing the cost to a maximum of €28,500. With additional discounts from partners like Repsol, prices can fall below €20,000, making competition incredibly challenging. The Chery Group, with brands like  Omoda  and  Jaecoo , aims to cater to consumers seeking modern aesthetics and fair pricing that local competitors struggle to match.

In this tight segment, the Jaecoo 5’s interior quality stands out. Unlike many traditional models like the  Dacia Duster , which often employ hard plastics, the Jaecoo 5 embraces softer, padded surfaces. The cabin boasts a  13.2-inch  central screen, a multifunction steering wheel, and various modern amenities, including heated seats and multiple ADAS technologies.

Driving Experience

We tested both the electric and gasoline models over a 140-kilometer route, primarily on highways. Surprisingly, I found the electric version to be more engaging, although the gasoline variant may enjoy higher sales.

The electric version feels more refined for city driving, thanks to its 211 HP motor and efficient battery performance, averaging  18.43 kWh/100 km  over our trip. Given its 60 kWh battery, it offers a practical range exceeding  300 kilometers .

With  130 kW  charging capabilities, long road trips become feasible without extended waiting times. The gasoline model features a 1.6 TGDI four-cylinder engine, putting out 147 HP, paired with a seven-speed gearbox. It adopts three driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport. Interestingly, the difference in performance becomes palpable in Sport mode compared to the more fuel-efficient Normal mode.

Both models offer similar driving dynamics; however, steering feedback can feel artificial and overly firm at times. While  Dacia  models may be more fuel-efficient, the Jaecoo 5’s well-finished interior offers a  notable upgrade  for budget-conscious consumers.

The driving assistance systems perform admirably, exhibiting minimal false positives. Acceleration after braking remains seamless, adding to the overall driving experience. However, a tendency for powerful braking is evident when safety systems activate due to obstacles.

In summary, the Jaecoo 5 is poised to make waves in the competitive SUV segment. While the electric version faces challenges in maintaining promotional pricing, the gasoline variant offers attractive features at a price around  €20,000 . As we await the hybrid version due at the year’s end, Jaecoo aims to become a serious contender in the automotive landscape.
