Following the meeting, Özgür Özel addressed the press, stating that “time in politics passes very quickly.” He also mentioned that they shared thoughts regarding the upcoming Presidential Assembly elections . Numan Kurtulmuş added that they discussed specific matters relating to the functioning of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) during their meeting.
Kurtulmuş emphasized, “We discussed continuing towards a new period termed ‘Terror-Free Turkey’ through a comprehensive commission encompassing the entire Assembly. We hope for the contributions of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in this endeavor. Our goal is to tackle one of Turkey’s most significant problems: the issue of terrorism. We deliberated on potential steps to eliminate this menace.”
“THE WORKING CONDITIONALS OF THE COMMISSION ARE CRUCIAL”
In his remarks, Özgür Özel noted, “We take the issues of a terror-free and democratic Turkey extremely seriously. We have consistently emphasized the need for social consensus through a commission in the Assembly. I made this point repeatedly in my speeches starting from October.” He expressed how significant it is to move towards establishing such a commission in the TBMM.
“However, the composition and the operational methods of the commission will be critical,” Özel continued. “It’s essential to secure a broad consensus on these points. We will share our perspectives and ideas with the Chair. As we proceed, we will communicate our positions as a party on this matter. The parliament is the appropriate setting to discuss these issues; no successful process can proceed without involvement from the Assembly. We emphasize the crucial role the TBMM must play in this matter.”
Özel concluded with a call to ensure that the opinions of all stakeholders, particularly the families of martyrs, veterans, and those affected by terrorism, are included as part of the social consensus in this process. “We shared these views with the President. Going forward, the Republican People’s Party will positively contribute to every initiative undertaken within the Assembly framework.”
These proposals included the following:
First, to ensure that the commission’s work is broad and transparent, it should consist of representatives from all 16 political parties represented in the Assembly, comprising 100 members, depending on operational conditions.
Second, each political party represented in the TBMM must have at least one member in the commission, while the other members should be determined based on the proportional representation of the parties with groups.
Third, each political party represented in the TBMM should appoint two domain experts to the commission.
Fourth, the commission should establish its working procedures and principles.
Fifth, the TBMM President should preside over the commission.
Sixth, decisions in the commission should be made by a simple majority.
Seventh, decisions taken by the commission should be prepared as proposals by the members of the Assembly and submitted to relevant committees and the General Assembly of the TBMM.
