Background of the Investigation
Following the tragic deaths of two CIA agents during a significant drug operation in Chihuahua, a specialized unit has been set up to investigate their involvement. Prosecutor Wendy Paola Chávez Villanueva has provided crucial details that contradict earlier claims made by former Attorney General César Jáuregui Moreno. This investigation aims to clarify the role of U.S. agents in the operation where one of the largest methamphetamine laboratories in the country was uncovered.
The Presence of U.S. Agents
According to Chávez Villanueva, the presence of these agents was neither notified nor authorized by the higher authorities of the State Investigation Agency (AEI). This inconsistency has opened further inquiries into their involvement, compelling officials to request more information from the U.S. government.
Limited and Discreet Intervention
The agents did not participate in the planning or direct execution of police actions, and their involvement was described as “limited and discreet.” They were in civilian clothing, traveling with the director of the AEI, Pedro Oseguera Cervantes, during the operation.
Chronology of Events
The investigation has pieced together a timeline of events, revealing that four unidentified individuals traveled with the AEI’s convoy. Despite being part of the operation, these agents had no interaction with military personnel during a meeting held prior to the operation. They did not carry weapons or insignia, maintaining a low profile throughout their apparent involvement.
Contradictory Statements
Previously, Jáuregui had claimed that the convoy merely came across the agents by chance and offered them a ride. However, the current investigation indicates otherwise, with evidence suggesting a premeditated involvement of foreign agents in the operation.
Discovery of the Laboratory
On April 18, at 06:00 a.m., searches began which led to the discovery of a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory shortly after. However, shortly after returning to Chihuahua, a tragic accident occurred, resulting in the deaths of the two CIA agents as well as several Mexican officials.
Future Investigations
The investigation into this incident is ongoing, with state authorities working alongside the Attorney General’s Office and the National Security Council. No clear evidence has yet emerged to confirm whether the agents were acting officially on behalf of any U.S. agency, raising numerous questions about international cooperation in drug enforcement.
The collaborative effort between U.S. and Mexican authorities in combating drug trafficking remains an ongoing discussion, especially in light of this complex and tragic incident.
