A new telluric movement rattled the town of Chupaca in the Junín region, igniting fresh alarm among residents who are still reeling from a significant earthquake that struck just last week. The Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) reported an aftershock with a magnitude of 3.6, occurring 9 kilometers deep at 11:15 AM on July 22, with its epicenter located 17 kilometers south of the city.

Intensity and Impact

The event was felt widely in the area, reaching an intensity of III-IV on the Mercalli scale, which indicates a notable tremor that can be felt indoors. The population remains on high alert, with many still recovering from the devastating earthquake that occurred on July 18, when a magnitude 5.1 quake resulted in at least five fatalities, numerous injuries, and several homes rendered uninhabitable.

Hernando Tavera, president of the IGP, confirmed that this latest tremor is directly related to the major earthquake of July 18 and warned that the seismic sequence could persist. He advised residents to remain cautious and prepared for potential subsequent movements.

Community Response and Precautions

The recent tremors have instilled considerable fear among the residents of Chupaca. An elderly local expressed their distress to RPP News, stating: “We saw stones fall from the hill, we are afraid.” This sentiment echoes a widespread atmosphere of anxiety and urgency within the community. Residents have opted to gather in open spaces whenever they sense seismic activity, mindful of the destruction they recently endured.

Local authorities and emergency response teams are maintaining ongoing surveillance and assessment of damage to infrastructure and homes. The IGP emphasizes the necessity of staying informed via official channels and adhering to safety recommendations in light of the potential for further aftershocks.
