The Silent Dominance of Video Games
When considering the cultural industries that accumulate billions of euros in annual revenue, most people instinctively think of cinema, music, or literature. However, one industry has quietly overshadowed these traditional sectors: video games.
Explosive Growth in Popularity
Today, video games have become a favored pastime for Spaniards. According to the latest yearbook from the General Society of Authors and Editors (SGAE), almost 70% of the population aged 15 to 70 reported playing video games in 2024, averaging approximately 8.2 hours each week. This engagement has propelled the sector’s revenue to exceed €2.3 billion, showcasing a staggering rise of nearly 30% since 2019.
Comparative Industry Earnings
The income generated by the video game industry significantly surpasses that of other entertainment sectors. For instance, consumer books generated €1.653 billion, while recorded and live music brought in €1.175 billion. The press and cinema lagged behind with €946 million and €535 million, respectively. Yet, the video game sector remains shy of the €3.4 billion earned by traditional television and video.
Driving Factors behind Growth
Forecasts suggest that video game revenues could grow to €2.788 billion by 2028. This growth can be largely attributed to the expansion of digital markets, which already account for 26% of Spain’s GDP. In 2024, online sales alone reached €1.558 billion—an increase of 19.8% from the previous year—making up 64.7% of the total revenue.
Changing Consumer Behavior
Shopping trends have shifted towards online platforms and mobile applications, which continue to dominate the gaming landscape. Conversely, the physical market is in decline, with a total drop in sales for both consoles (-21.5%) and video games (-20.1%).
Top-selling Games and Emerging Trends
In 2024, the rankings of best-selling games reveal a diverse array, yet the action genre remains king with 1,519,060 units sold. The sports genre follows closely with 976,867 units. Titles like EA Sports FC 25 and Grand Theft Auto V dominated sales, with Nintendo also making its mark, featuring four titles in the top 20, including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
The Rise of eSports
In addition to traditional gaming, the eSports sector has seen a steady 13% growth from the previous year, although it still captures a modest share of total industry income at just 1.9%. Projections indicate that the prominence of competitive gaming will continue to rise, bolstered by platforms like Twitch and YouTube, which serve as significant venues for live event viewership.
