Mexican Archery Team Shines at the Pan American Qualifier
The Mexican Archery Team showcased exceptional skill on the third day of the Pan American Qualifier held in Tlaxcala, successfully placing Ángela Ruiz, Adriana Castillo, and Matías Grande into the semifinals of their respective individual events. This strong performance also secures the nation’s spots at the Lima 2027 Pan American Games.

The archery competitions unfolded at the Nueva Historia athletics track in Apizaco, marking the end of preliminary phases before the finals shift to the Historic Center of Tlaxcala this weekend.
Pursuit of Final Spots
In the women’s recurve bow category, Ángela Ruiz started strong, achieving a 6-0 triumph over Peruvian Alexandra Zavala. She continued her winning streak by defeating Canadian athlete Kylie Oliver with the same score. Ruiz then beat fellow Mexican Ana Paula Vázquez 6-4 in the quarterfinals, positioning herself for a significant matchup against American Jennifer Mucino in the semifinals.
The day’s standout performer was Adriana Castillo in the women’s compound bow category. The Baja Californian stunned the audience by overcoming Argentine María Eugenia González in a tiebreaker during the round of 32. She then triumphed over American Liko Arreola with a score of 145-144 and outperformed reigning world champion Andrea Maya Becerra, winning 147-146. Castillo will now face Colombian Sara López for a place in the finals.
On the men’s side, Matías Grande demonstrated his prowess by leading the recurve qualifying round with a score of 683. He defeated Daniel Catariz from Trinidad and Tobago 6-0, Brazilian Matheus Gomes 6-4, and compatriot Francisco Padilla 7-3 in the quarterfinals. Grande is set to challenge Canadian Eric Peters in the semifinals.
Upcoming Challenges
Before diving into individual semifinals, Matías Grande will aim for a gold medal in the mixed team event alongside Alejandra Valencia. Additionally, Andrea Maya Becerra and Sebastian Garcia will compete for the bronze medal in the compound bow category.
Support and Recognition
Reflecting on the team’s achievements, Gabriel Ramos Rodríguez, president of World Archery México and vice president of World Archery Americas, stated that the national team has met the objectives set for the event, emphasizing their readiness for upcoming competitions. He noted their focus on the Central American and Caribbean Games in the Dominican Republic in just three weeks.
Furthermore, part of the national team will conduct training sessions in Mérida, Yucatán, while another group is set to travel to the World Cup in Madrid, Spain. He praised Ángela Ruiz’s performance, underscoring the constant growth of the Mexican archery team.
The semifinals and finals of the Pan American Qualifier will take place this Saturday and Sunday at 9:00 and 12:30 in the Historical Center of Tlaxcala, where the Mexican archers aim to wrap up an outstanding showing in the competition.
