On Father’s Day, several paddlers and a motorboat captain found themselves in distress in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, partly due to alcohol influence. Tragically, two men in Wolgast and another in Barnin lost their lives during the holiday.

In Wolgast, two men drowned on Thursday night. Around 11:40 PM, the water police were informed that an angler had fallen into the harbor basin. Witnesses reported that the 27-year-old man could not free himself from the water and eventually submerged. A 40-year-old man from a group of bystanders made the brave decision to jump into the water to rescue the angler but also did not resurface. Rescue swimmers, boats, and divers from the THW were deployed, along with two search drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras. After two and a half hours, the two men were retrieved from the water, but unfortunately, they were already lifeless. An emergency doctor confirmed their deaths. Witnesses to the incident received support from a crisis intervention team, and the criminal investigation department in Anklam has since taken over the investigation into the cause of the accident.

Man Drowns in Barniner See

A 53-year-old man lost his life on Thursday in Barnin, near Crivitz (Ludwigslust-Parchim district). The man was presumably out on the Barniner See. The police received a distress call around 2:30 PM reporting that a boat with two occupants had capsized. Rescue teams could only recover the 53-year-old deceased. The exact circumstances of how the accident occurred on the lake are still under investigation. The boat driver, a 55-year-old man, was found to have an alcohol level of 1.25 permille, as reported. The recovery of the fully capsized boat is still pending.

Three Boats Capsize Near Greifswald

On Thursday, two paddling boats and one motorboat capsized at the harbor entrance near Greifswald. Five people, who were canoeing, attempted to return to their home dock after a paddling tour in the Dänische Wieck and were being towed by a motorboat. During this process, water entered all three boats, causing them to capsize. All six individuals went overboard and floated in the water. They were rescued about 30 minutes later by the crew of the traditional sailing vessel “Hanne Marie” and brought ashore, where rescue personnel attended to them. Two individuals were transported to the hospital for further treatment. The 39-year-old motorboat driver showed signs of extreme intoxication, with a blood alcohol level of 1.7 permille; legally, a maximum of 0.5 permille is permitted on the water. The Wolgast water police have filed a criminal complaint against him.

Alleged Exhibitionist Injures Four Police Officers

A 28-year-old man injured four police officers in Neubukow (Rostock district), one of them severely. The officers were responding to reports of an exhibitionist when the suspect suddenly attacked them, as stated by the police. One 21-year-old officer was struck in the face, causing him to briefly lose consciousness. He was subsequently taken to the Rostock University Hospital, where he was treated for a suspected jaw fracture and a concussion. The other three officers, aged 22 and 24, sustained bruises and injuries to their hands and arms. The suspect has been taken into custody, and the police are investigating charges of resisting arrest and assaulting law enforcement officers. Reportedly, the man was under the influence of narcotics at the time of the incident.

Youth Group Shouts Anti-Constitutional Slogans

Witnesses in Ribnitz-Damgarten reported on Thursday evening that a large group of youths was marching from the Bernsteinsee in Körkwitz toward Ribnitz-Damgarten while shouting anti-constitutional slogans. Additionally, it was reported that pyrotechnics were ignited from within the group. Several witnesses confirmed these observations and provided detailed descriptions of the suspects to the police. Four heavily intoxicated individuals aged 20 to 22 were found in the area. Investigations are currently underway against them on suspicion of using symbols of unconstitutional organizations. The State Protection Unit of the Criminal Police Inspection Anklam is leading the investigation.
