In an inspiring ceremony at the Hippodrome of the Zarzuela in Madrid, Spanish basketball player Iyana Martín reflected on her successful year in the sport. Having debuted in the prominent Euroleague and successfully securing a silver medal at the Eurobasket , Iyana expressed her gratitude and determination for even greater achievements ahead.
“This has been an incredible year ; a year ago I could not even imagine having debuted or played in the Euroleague or the Queen’s Cup. It is a pride and a dream,” she stated. She received the award for being the young player with the greatest projection , crediting her success to her family, teammates, and coaches who supported her along the way.
Dedication to Growth
Iyana emphasized the importance of hard work. “I am very young and I have a lot left. What they tell me at home is always that you have to work every day, because I haven’t done anything yet,” she noted. Looking ahead, she expressed her hopes for the upcoming season, stating her desire to enjoy basketball and to achieve titles with her team after an impressive year marked by her debut on the international stage.
“At the time, it was hard for the team because I think they both deserved it a lot. We had a spectacular championship. It hurt a lot, but you look at it with perspective, and very few people trusted what we could achieve. We were a new group, comprised of very young players , and we are very proud,” she explained, demonstrating her dedication to both personal and team growth.
Overcoming Adversity
Her journey was not without its challenges. During her stint at Eurobasket, she faced a tough time for five days in the hospital due to health issues. “It was my first Eurobasket; I had been dreaming about that since I was very small, and it was a very complicated moment. But I also realized all the people behind me, the support of my companions, and the staff. Everyone came to see me in the hospital. I did not arrive at full strength, but I gave everything of me to encourage my companions,” she recounted, truly showcasing her resilience and team spirit.
Iyana expressed her hopes for the men’s national team as well. “I hope they can create a good team, a cohesive group, which, in the end, is what saved us and enabled us to succeed in the past tournament. I hope they enjoy and work hard; everything worthwhile comes with effort,” she said, encapsulating the essence of teamwork and perseverance.
Aina Ayuso’s Aspirations
At the same gala, fellow international player Aina Ayuso was recognized as the best national player. “I am very grateful, because being here after such a wonderful year for me is incredible. I want to thank my companions, my coaches, and all the people who support me,” she shared with humility. Aina echoed Iyana’s sentiments regarding the importance of enjoying the game . “I want to continue working, growing, and enjoying because when you enjoy, you play well. Daily effort leads to future successes,” she added.
