If there’s one thing that Cornwall is known for—apart from its picturesque landscapes and romantic after-dinner TV movies—it’s its rich mining heritage. This charming coastal region is now reinventing itself through an innovative deep geothermal project. This initiative not only connects to the national grid but also has the capability of generating energy for 10,000 homes.
A Pioneer Plant in Redruth
In February, Cornwall proudly commissioned the first geothermal power station in the UK, boasting the hottest and deepest well in the nation. The United Downs project by Geothermal Engineering Ltd (GEL) focuses on utilizing the region’s hot granite rocks for sustainable electricity and heat generation.
As GEL CEO Ryan Law aptly noted, “It’s like someone built a huge nuclear power plant underground.” This remarkable initiative taps into the heat generated beneath the Earth’s surface, presenting an eco-friendly energy source.
Clean Energy for the Future
Unlike many energy sources, this geothermal plant offers the promise of constant electricity and heat, while requiring minimal land space compared to other renewable installations. Current data indicates that such projects can produce 5 MW with an exceptionally low carbon footprint, ranging from 5 to 15 grams of CO2 per kW.
Beyond Electricity: Lithium Extraction
The United Downs project doesn’t stop at energy production. It also aims to extract high concentrations of lithium from the mineral-rich water it utilizes. Remarkably, when the water temperature drops to 50ºC during energy generation, it becomes ideal for lithium separation—an element increasingly in demand for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage.
This innovative approach, known as the direct extraction of lithium, minimizes environmental impact by avoiding traditional methods like evaporation ponds and open-pit mining.
The Working Mechanism
Geothermal energy relies on the natural heat produced by the Earth. GEL explains that geothermal plants typically access high-temperature areas through the drilling of wells.
Initially, a production well brings the hot water to the surface, where pressurized steam drives a turbine to generate electricity, akin to nuclear energy—without the associated risks or waste. It’s also during this phase that lithium is extracted.
A second, shallower injection well reintroduces the used water back into the geothermal reservoir, perpetuating the cycle.
Global Interest in Geothermal Lithium Extraction
With an eye toward energy independence, many countries are exploring geothermal energy paired with lithium extraction. Initiatives similar to the UK’s geothermal lithium projects are taking shape in Germany with Vulcan Energy Resources and in France with Eramet and Strasbourg Electricity, both classified as strategic by the European Union.
However, while Spain has significant lithium resources, existing projects continue to rely on conventional mining methods. Though geothermal resources exist, particularly in the Canary Islands, no hybrid projects combining geothermal energy and lithium extraction are currently underway.
Reviving Cornwall’s Mining Legacy
Cornwall has a long-standing history in mineral extraction, predominantly tin and copper. As the region faces the decline of traditional mining, forward-thinking companies like GEL are revitalizing the sector, aligning it with the global shift toward sustainable energy solutions.
“People here are proud of their mining tradition,” Greg Foxwell, a member of Gwennap parish council, remarked. There have been tangible benefits: the Cornish geothermal plant has recently created 100 jobs for engineers, chemists, geologists, and local suppliers, fostering a renewed connection to the area’s rich resources.
