In a significant escalation of tensions, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced this Sunday that the spokesperson of the Qassam Ezedin Brigades, the military wing of the terrorist group Hamas, has been eliminated in a recent Israeli military offensive. The attack underscores the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which continues to escalate in the region.
“Hamas’ terrorist spokesman, Abu Obeida, was eliminated in Gaza and has joined the ranks of individuals eradicated from the evil axis of Iran, Lebanon, and Yemen in the depths of hell,” Katz stated on his platform, X. This declaration marks a significant moment in Israel’s ongoing military campaign against Hamas, which has intensified dramatically since the October 7, 2023 attacks that claimed numerous civilian lives.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier reported that Israeli forces were specifically targeting Obeida as part of a broader strategy to dismantle Hamas’s leadership. “We attacked the Hamas spokesperson, the representative of this criminal organization, Abu Obeida,” Netanyahu said following a government meeting. “I hope he is no longer among us, but I see that there is no clarity from Hamas regarding this matter,” he added, further emphasizing the gravity of this military action.

Abu Obeida has long been recognized as a prominent figure within Hamas, frequently appearing in videos wearing military attire and a red Kufiya scarf that obscured his face. He had become a public face of the group and was known for his rhetoric justifying their military actions against Israel.
Since the initial attacks by Hamas in October, Israel has intensified military operations aimed at dismantling the entire leadership structure of Hamas. In nearly 23 months of ongoing conflict, these operations have targeted key figures within the organization, such as Ismail Haniyeh, the political chief, and Mohammed Deif, a senior military leader, both identified as central to orchestrating the Hamas attacks.
In a troubling turn of events, Hamas confirmed this weekend the death of its military chief in Gaza, Mohammed Sinwar. This follows Israel’s previous announcement of having undertaken operations targeting him back in May. While the group did not elaborate on the conditions of Sinwar’s death, it did honor him alongside other leaders, referring to them as “Martyrs.”

Mohammed Sinwar, a younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, previously led Hamas’s military engagements and was deeply involved in planning the October 7 attacks. After Yahya’s elimination in late 2024, Mohammed took over the military leadership. Events escalated as Israel conducted a targeted operation against Sinwar earlier in May, attacking the European Hospital in Khan Younis, aiming to destroy Hamas’s underground facilities. The military’s disclosures indicated the operation also resulted in eliminating Muhammad Shabana, commander of the Rafah brigade.

Mohammed Sinwar was born on September 16, 1975, in the Khan Younis refugee camp, having grown up alongside his brother Yahya. Their family had fled from Majdal, a town now part of Ashkelon, Israel, during the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, a period referred to in Arabic as Nakba.
The violence that escalated on October 7, 2023 , when Hamas launched a wide-ranging attack in southern Israel, resulted in the deaths of 1,219 individuals, the majority being civilians, according to an AFP report based on Israeli figures. From the 251 hostages taken during that attack, around 47 remain captive, with roughly 20 believed to be alive within Gaza.
In retaliation, the Israeli military offensive has claimed approximately 63,459 lives in Gaza, predominantly civilians, as reported by the Gaza Ministry of Health, which is controlled by Hamas. The accuracy of these figures has been corroborated by the United Nations, reflecting the tragic human toll of the ongoing conflict.
